Default Sportsnuts Steelers Preveiw

2005-2006 Preveiw

The Steelers and "Big Ben" look to repeat a magical season. Will we see the Ben we saw in the 15-1 regular season, or the Ben we saw in the playoffs?

Dreams of a Super Bowl ended early as the Steelers saw their 2004 season end with a 41-27 loss to eventual champs New England in the AFC Championship Game.

There aren't many changes in 2005. The most notable addition is wide receiver Cedrick Wilson, who replaces the most notable departure, Plaxico Burress. That lack of roster turnover can't hurt team chemistry, and the Steelers should be able to get off to a quick start with everyone on the same page.

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger performed beyond all expectations as a rookie starter in the regular season, but he really seemed to show his inexperience in the team's two playoff contests with 5 interceptions. Between Duce Staley and the Bus the Steelers love to pound the ball and control the game which should help take pressure off the young QB

The defense will likely be at the top of the league rankings again, as the only departure from that unit is linebacker Kendrell Bell. Expect more of the same from the Steelers this season. This defense is no less dominant than the "Steel Curtain" of old.

Pittsburgh should be a Super Bowl contender, but in the NFL, nothing is given away. The Steelers will contend again and would dominate the NFC, but with Indy and New England in the AFC its never going to be as easy as it should be.

Nice find BB2W. I am interested to see how Cedrick Wilson does with us. I don't know a whole lot about the guy. I think the defense will excel again and I believe the run will do the same. The Steelers will definitely be contenders.

Yeah I have to agree that you will indeed be contenders.
The back-2-back wins over the eventual SB finalists was a fantastic achievement and shows that this is not a fluke year - that they can consistently match up against the best in the NFL.

I would stake fairly large money that we are going to see alot of 8-in-the-box stuff against the Steelers this year - forcing Ben to throw.
What the Steelers need to do is add a bit of spontaneity to their play calling - the bash bash smash mouth football will only take you so far before D coaches work you out.
I would like to see more passes on first down, as you could almsot stake the house that Pitts would run on this down almost everytime last year.

regards

LITP, you really think 8 in the box after you guys were so effective dropping back 8 clogging the lanes? You spread us out before and everyone copied that. Just wondering why everyone wouldn't try to copy you guys again versus us.

Its a possibility for sure. But I think the game plans of most teams will be to shut down the run by stuffing it all the line. Of course this depends on which RB you got going at the time Bettis the inside runner or Staley the faster outside guy.

Will be interestiung for sure - this is how them head coaches and co-ordinators earn their money!

Yeah, I guess. Just think we live for people to bring every one up. Thats are comfort zone. We don't really like it when teams sit back and can be as patient as you all were in the playoffs. Haven't seemed to get that one figured out yet. Maybe Ken W. will have a few wrinkles this year with the whole playbook.
