Default Gerry Dulac breaks down Game 2 vs. Bengals

Gerry Dulac breaks down Game 2 vs. Bengals
Sunday, September 24, 2006

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Game plan

What the Steelers will do: After rushing for just 26 yards on 14 attempts against the Jaguars, the Steelers will probably see a lot of run blitzes in an attempt to keep Willie Parker from getting untracked. That will force QB Ben Roethlisberger to attack the middle of the field when the Bengals bring S Madieu Williams into the box to stop the run. The Steelers must stop RB Rudi Johnson, who has 241 yards in two games, and keep him from controlling the clock the way Fred Taylor helped the Jaguars.

What the Bengals will do: QB Carson Palmer has not had big games against the Steelers because he has been unable to connect on big plays to WR Chad Johnson, who is always shadowed by CB Ike Taylor. But expect the Bengals to spread the defense with multiple-receiver formations designed to take OLB Joey Porter away from the line of scrimmage. However, the loss of C Rich Braham will force G Eric Steinbach to help on NT Casey Hampton. The suspension of MLB Odell Thurman will hurt the run defense. The Bengals have to prove they can stop the run after allowing 460 yards rushing in three meetings in 2005.

Keep an eye on ...

Bengals WRs Chris Henry and Kelley Washington: With so much attention heaped on stopping Chad Johnson and even T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who is bothered by heel and knee injuries, the Steelers have to be concerned about deep passes to the other wideouts. Henry and Washington have combined for 12 catches, 195 yards and a touchdown. Henry leads the team with an 18-yard receiving average.

Game: Cincinnati Bengals (2-0) at Steelers (1-1).

When: 1 p.m.

Where: Heinz Field.

Radio: WDVE-FM (102.5), WBGG-AM (970)

Despite winning the AFC North Division title and winning their previous meeting at Heinz Field Dec. 4, the Bengals still have an inferiority complex with the Steelers. After Monday night's lackluster performance in Jacksonville, the Steelers want to prove their offense can still be efficient and productive.

Keys to victory

To win, the Bengals must ...

1) Not tip the Porter. LT Levi Jones, who did not play last week, has to keep OLB Joey Porter away from Palmer.

2) Give Parker the willies. The Bengals brought in DT Sam Adams to help the run defense, and they will need him against the Steelers.

3) Have Chad be bad. Johnson needs to make big plays and keep the Steelers from playing with a lead.

To win, the Steelers must ...

1) Have Ben on the mend. Roethlisberger needs to be sharper with his throws and make better decisions than he did in Jacksonville.

2) Be rude to Rudi. They cannot let the Bengals control the ball on the ground and dictate the pace of play.

3) Not let Palmer be calmer. If he has enough time, Palmer will pick apart any defense, any secondary.
