The quote attributed to Hines was said to have been made the day before the Cincy loss.

My thought is he said it to fire himself up and was saying it to fire up the team as to the importance of that game.

Making that statement before the game was motivational; making that statement after the loss would not have been.

IMHO Hines is trying to backtrack from a statement that he never thought would become reality.

Receiver Hines Ward denied a comment attributed to him in the recent Sports Illustrated that he was reported to have said the day before the Steelers played Cincinnati Sept. 24:

"You don't want to overemphasize one early game. But let's face it -- if you get two games behind two teams, you're probably not going to win the division and you're going to be fighting to make the playoffs."

Said Ward: "I didn't say that. It's too early. It's not a must-win situation."

I tend to believe this latest quote atrributed to Ward by SI is accurate, given that: 1) SI probably was going to be particularly careful about attributing anything to Ward after he ran away from statements in an article in SI earlier this year; and 2) that quote is an accurate assessment of the consequences of falling behind 2 teams in a 4 team division.

Hines Ward has been a great Steeler but I have diminished respect for athletes (or for that mattter anyone else) who make a statement to the media and then deny making the statement if it places them in a difficult position.
Thats all I need and it's all any of us should need. Come on people.

Come on people - what - augusta? While Dan makes some very good points, several of us don't share the same thoughts - what's the big deal? Even if Hines did say what he is rumored to have said, it doesn't change my overall opinion of him as a pro or as a person.

The MEDIA stinks!
Easy on the media killer. Most of them are "evil" but not all of them twist things out of content. I've had them take my quotes and use what they want to their advantage, but I've also had great guys who tell it straight. Hines could always learn another language and do his interviews that way. Reporters love that!

I agree, but if Hines says he did'nt say it then thats what I'm going with. This is not a big deal to me one way or the other, if he said it or if he did'nt. I just put my thoughts out there, as you put it "several of us don't share the same thoughts". My post was not intended to bash anyone, just thought that if he said he did'nt say these things that we would all believe him over a national sportswriter.
