Default What's Up With Heinz Field Turf?

On an otherwise great day, the turf conditions at Heinz Field were once again slippery. I saw several players fall, notably when Parker attempted to cut back along the sideline.

I suppose it could be the wrong cleats, but I remember the same problem in the Miami game to open the season.

Now that I have hi-def, Heinz Field looks even worse than the fields for other stadiums such as (I hate to admit it) whatever turf the Ravens are playing on. This of course excludes New England, which apparently plowed up Gillette's field for the fall planting

The turf has been a mess since the Steelers moved in to Heinz:, hopefully it will not take a major knee injury to someone who attempts to cut on that mess for the Roonys to admit they were wrong and get one of the new artificial surfaces on the ground.

I personally hope that we never have artificial turf in PA ever again... it took Rod Woodson out and the very next year it took out Greg Lloyd... the artificial turf is nothing but bad news and I dont like it.. its fast but it hurts players all the time...

I am not saying bring back the Three Rivers Tartan Turf - the new fields are incredibly better than the rug the Steelers played on at TRS

As for Greg Lloyd - he was injured at Jax on a grass field

That field is an embarrassment to the entire NFL. Cowher must be doing it on purpose for some kind of leverage like the old Raiders and their bag of tricks.

BTW, this is a joke. I said it because we, as the first post points out, have the worst field in the league right now and people are saying Belichick has done it on purpose.

Although I never want to see anything but grass on our field, there must be something that can be done to make it more grippy. Willie would have been gone if it wasn't for that slip!

I actually wonder if it is like that on purpose so that the Steeler players

1. Don't get thier cleats stuck and blow a knee. and

2. the harder it is to cut... the harder it is for opposing receivers to get away from our DB's. When we shut down thier run, they have to go to the pass. Remember... we run between the tackles. So it doesnt affect us as much (supposedly).

Now, I know that it actually has affected us. I just wonder if this is the thinking.

I think we've already revisited this several times already...but the Steelers use the same surface as the Broncos - DD GrassMaster. It seems to hold up well there, but not here for whatever reason - some have said it's because of Heinz Field's proximity to the river. The Ravens use an artificial grass, as do the Bengals after tearing up their awful turf, so maybe it is time to go to that type of surface. Grass just may not grow and hold well in certain places.

The turf you are referencing in Three Rivers in the day of Woodson, Lloyd, etc. is NOT the Fieldturf surface that exists today. It's like comparing night to day.

Fieldturf is AWESOME! A hybrid of sewn synthetic grass and real natural grass within a cushioned base. The majority of pro players around the league prefer the surface to ANYTHING! More importantly, this particular Steelers team is built on speed and quickness. The current surface is not allowing our players to perform to their God given ability.

The surface at Heinz Field is embarassing and needs to be resurfaced with Fieldturf. If local surrounding high schools can pony up the $1.8 million to put it down, the Steelers should certainly be able to find the cash.
