Penguins owner appears before state gaming control board
Wednesday, December 13, 2006

By Tracie Mauriello, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Harrisburg -- New Penguins owner Jim Balsillie told the state Gaming Control board today that Plan B could be a vehicle to keep the team in Pittsburgh if Isle of Capri is not awarded the city's slots license next week.

Returning to Harrisburg a second time to testify before the board, Mr. Balsillie said he would pursue the Plan B alternative funding proposal for an arena with local politicians if Isle of Capri doesn't win the three-way competition. However, he reiterated that the Isle's plan, with its pledge of $290 million for a new arena, is the best because it guarantees that the team will stay in Pittsburgh. Plan B does not.

The Penguins would not be required to kick in any money under the Isle of Capri proposal. Under Plan B, it would be obligated to contribute $8.5 million upfront and $4 million a year for 30 years toward the construction -- points that could be subject to negotiation if either Forest City Enterprises or PITG Gaming LLC gets the casino license.

If Mr. Balsillie is unable to cut a deal with Mayor Luke Ravenstahl and Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato for a new arena under Plan B, he would be free to move the team elsewhere. The Penguins' Mellon Arena lease expires at the end of June. He told the board he wants to keep the club in Pittsburgh, but only if he gets a new arena to play in.

Always a fun one against the Cryers. Both Forsberg and Carter are out tonight. The only aspect of this game that scares me is that the Cryers are due for a win (lost four in a row) and we are coming off a road trip. Eitherway, good teams automatically win these type of games.

I called 5-4 Pens against the Caps and ended up spot on. Tonight I'm going 5-2 Penguins.

Sidney Crosby with six points tonight. All I have to say........imagine if he had legitimate wingers.

Look at Jagr who is an excellent hockey player in my opinion (anybody with a hockey brain would agree). He plays on a line with Shanny and Straka. After tonight, Crosby is three points in front of him in the standings and he plays on a line with a used up Mark Recchi and a hot and mostly cold Ryan Malone.

Just imagine..............

Jagr does not play with Shanny - he plays with Straka and Michael Nylander. Shanny is on the second line with Matt Cullen, but I don't know who the RW is on that line.

As for the game tonight, it was great seeing the Pens abuse the Flyers again - 5-0 against them this season! Sid with 6 points and Gonchar with 5 - just unreal nights for both. After this game, there is no question now that the Flyers are the worst team in the NHL. St. Louis is even better than they are.

lol, my apologies. Nylander and Straka who both have 38 points a piece while playing with Jagr. Eitherway.....

Anyways, SCM you catch that game? Nice win by the Pens. Nice to see Ouellet find the back of the net even though I would still send him down to WBS and bring up Filewich. The Staal goal was beautiful.

Amazing how the doom and gloom can be turned around with a nice road trip and a Flyer beating huh? LET'S GO PENS!!!!

Dude, seriously...I nor anyone else ever once said that Jagr wasn't a great player. He clearly is. I don't like or respect the man for being the whining prima donna that he is, but I will never take that away from him.

Oh boy. Here we go again.

Ummm....I was using him as an example since he was leading the NHL in points before Sid came along last night. That is why his name popped up last night. A good number of fans around the league (never stated you or anybody else on this board) jumped on the guy for his performance in D.C. and wrote the guy off as if he never helped a hockey franchise win two Stanley Cups.

That was a great goal. Getting passed a defender and totally faking the goalie out!

Penguins, LeClair part ways
Thursday, December 14, 2006

By Dave Molinari, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Penguins will formally sever their ties to left winger John LeClair today, and are expected to do it in a fairly creative fashion.

Rather than suspending LeClair, who has declined to accept an assignment to their farm team in Wilkes-Barre, or having him retire, the Penguins apparently will use a fairly obscure portion of the NHL's collective bargaining agreement called "unconditional waivers."

Under that provision of the CBA, teams offer the rights to a player to other teams for a fee of $125, then has the ability to terminate his contract, a move LeClair -- who will become an unrestricted free agent -- presumably has endorsed.

This way of resolving the issue prevents the Penguins from having to suspend a highly respected veteran, but frees them from having to pay his salary, although it apparently will continue to count against their salary cap.

LeClair, meanwhile, is free to seek work with any team that's interested in him and to negotiate a new contract that might be more palatable to that club than the one he had with the Penguins.
