Steelers-Ravens Match-ups
Friday, December 22, 2006

The following are some of the interesting matchups to watch when the Steelers host the Baltimore Ravens at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Heinz Field:

STEELERS RT WILLIE COLON AND RG KENDALL SIMMONS VS. RAVENS DL TREVOR PRYCE AND OLB TERRELL SUGGS: The obvious matchup is the rookie Colon vs. the Pro Bowl bound Suggs, but with the Ravens defense, it always turns out to be more than it originally appears. The Ravens certainly aren't afraid to go after people one-on-one, but what makes their defense so difficult for opponents is the way they have been able to do things in combinations. And when the combination is Pryce and Suggs, it's a potent one. Pryce leads the team with 12 sacks, and Suggs has added eight, and the Ravens will move them around, or they may move other people around, to create situations where Pryce and Suggs can make plays. "They move around a lot. They do a good job," said Coach Bill Cowher. "They give you some really different looks. We kind of pride ourselves on that, but they have done a nice job of taking it to another level, I think. They really do a good job of disguising and bringing different people from outside, from inside and they move around. You have to be on top of everything. You better be on top of all the protections, the communication needs to be there. Certainly we are going to have a better plan than we had last time going in there."

STEELERS DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR DICK LeBEAU VS. RAVENS QB STEVE McNAIR: LeBeau is being used here as a symbol of the fact the Steelers defense needs to do a better job vs. McNair early in the game than it did in the meeting back on Nov. 26. In that game, McNair directed the Ravens on two quick touchdown drives that put the Ravens up, 14-0, early in the second quarter. Once that happened, the Baltimore defense was free to dip into its bag of tricks and make life extremely difficult, and also painful, for Ben Roethlisberger. "They got off to a fast start and we couldn't match that, and got behind," said Cowher. "They were playing at home. The crowd got into it. That's what I'd like to be able to do, get off to a fast start and let our crowd get into it. It's a factor. Say what you want. Some of the things they were doing with the looks, it was hard to communicate some things. We still have to block it. You still have to win some of those match-ups, so that will be a challenge that we have this week. It will be nice to play at home in a game of this magnitude. We're still hanging on. Hopefully, we can get off to a good start and get our crowd into it, and create a little bit of that advantage for our side." It's going to be difficult going against the Ravens defense, and if the Steelers are going to avoid falling behind again they have to make it difficult going for McNair and the Ravens offense as well.

STEELERS PR SANTONIO HOLMES VS. RAVENS P SAM KOCH: The Ravens rank 22nd in the NFL in average punt return yards allowed, and their net punting average is 30th of 32. In games that are expected to be close because of solid defenses, an easy touchdown, or an opportunity for some easy points via good field position, can make a huge difference. Holmes returned a punt 65 yards for a touchdown last week against the Panthers, and that, or a nice return that sets up the offense with a short field would be a big help for the offense.

STEELERS FB DAN KREIDER VS. RAVENS MLB RAY LEWIS: One of the things the Steelers couldn't do at all in the first meeting was run the football, and any offense made one-dimensional against the Ravens is in trouble. Running the ball against the Ravens is a grind, a physical battle that is not for the faint of heart. The Steelers have had success running the ball against the Ravens, and while it's never easy, it's mandatory, at least to some degree. The Ravens have to be forced to respect the Steelers ability to run the football, or at least accept the fact the Steelers are going to continue to try to run the football. If the Steelers can't do it, and then quit trying, the nine sacks the Ravens recorded the last time will be their target once again.

STEELERS ROLB JOEY PORTER VS. RAVENS LT ADAM TERRY: Terrorizing the quarterback is something the Steelers defense can do as well, and the absence of Ogden along the Ravens offensive line is huge. Literally, in the case of Ogden, who is 6-foot-9, 345 pounds. Porter is an integral part of the emotional fabric of the Steelers, and it would be a big boost for the team if he got off to a quick start with a sack or some other type of big play. In the last meeting, the Steelers were buried under an avalanche of a succession of bad things. This time, they'll need to be spurred by some good things to build a little early momentum and force the Ravens to play the way the Steelers want to play.

Yeah, it's a good 70% chance he will not be playing.

Krieder vs Ray Lewis...I hope they spell Dan with a breather, and keep the FB fresh so Willie can run,run,run...

I think Ogden is out....a local golf magazine here did a story on him, he owns a house on Anthem CC..as for being one of the NFL's best OT's ; he's a pretty decent golfer too.

PFP was saying last night that the Ravens could resort to Shot Gun.

I wouldn't blame him. Adam Terry who will be the left tackle in Ogden's place is solid but not aggressive as J. Porter. McNair needs to see the blitz coming from both sides.

We all know what Kreider can do to Ray-Ray. And for those of us that dont remember, think of pancakes. I liked what I saw of Kuhn last week. He looks big and aggressive. I'd like to see what he can do as well.
