Source: Bruins' Kessel Diagnosed With Cancer

(CBS4) BOSTON CBS4 has learned for the second time in recent months, another young athlete is in a major medical fight. The Boston Bruins' first-round pick Phil Kessel has testicular cancer.

Sources say Kessel is currently at Mass. General Hospital and was due to undergo surgery.

Kessel is said to be in good spirits. He was the Bruins' number one pick and fifth overall in the NHL.

Testicular cancer usually occurs in young men and can be treated and often cured, according to the American Cancer Society.

Each year, about 8,000 men are diagnosed. This is one of the most curable forms of cancer.

A man's risk of getting this cancer in his lifetime is about one in 300, according to specialists.

Another Boston athlete, Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester, was also diagnosed with cancer earlier this year. He is currently in remission from Lymphoma and is expected to be at spring training in February.

Chris Drury had two goals and two assists as host Buffalo scored six goals in a span of little more than nine minutes en route to a 6-3 win against the Washington Capitals last night.

The Sabres grabbed a 6-0 lead on their first nine shots. The surge began with Brian Campbell's goal 1;51 into the game and ended with Thomas Vanek's goal at 10:57.

Other highlights

Rod Brind'Amour scored 50 seconds into the third period to spark the host Carolina Hurricanes to their fifth consecutive victory, a 4-2 win against the Florida Panthers. ...Denis Arkhipov and Martin Lapointe each scored a power-play goal to lead the Chicago Blackhawks to a 2-1 victory against the host Dallas Stars. The Blackhawks are 9-3-3 since Denis Savard became the coach Nov. 27.

Columbus placed goaltender Pascal Leclaire (hamstring) on injured reserve and recalled goaltender Ty Conklin and forward Joakim Lindstrom from its AHL affiliate in Syracuse. The club also said right winger Anson Carter (sprained shoulder) will miss up to two weeks. ... New York Rangers forward Jed Ortmeyer, out all season because of a pulmonary embolism, took another step toward returning to the active roster yesterday when he and defenseman Bryce Lampman were recalled from Hartford of the AHL. Neither player suited up for the road game last night against the New York Islanders.

I'm loving these new "Rbk Edge" jersey's. While they will be used for the All-Star game this season, Bettman plans on using them in the 07-08 season. What do you think SCM? Skidboot?

Pretty good man. I can see Crosby knocking out some people in that jersey along with the Eastern Conference pulling a win.

Don't like them. At all. Sorry, but I'm a traditionalist and the jersey should have been left alone other than maybe changing the material to improve absorbency.
