Post ESPN A LEADER IN HYPOCRISY

The following was taken from an article in the NY Post today by Phil Mushnick. I agree that ESPN is always quick to tell us what is wrong in the world of sports today but then will turn right around and promote the very thing they say is not right.

February 5, 2007 -- Just once, in addition to telling us what's wrong, ESPN should actually do something about it.

Throughout this NFL season, ESPN made shame-shame at the Bengals. Seven Bengals arrested, one four times. Then an eighth, and now nine.

But yesterday, on its Super Bowl pregame, ESPN was proud to introduce its "special guest analyst," Ray Lewis. That's Ray Lewis, the Ravens linebacker who copped an obstruction plea in a still unsolved double murder.

After all, Lewis was the MVP of Supe 35. But Lewis made news at Supe 34, too. That one was in Atlanta. That was where and when those two men were shot dead.

Yep, Ray Lewis, a fellow who impeded the investigation of a still unsolved double murder, was chosen by ESPN as yesterday's guest analyst. But, oh, those bad, bad Bengals.

Friday and Saturday, ESPN's "SportsCenter" loaded up on the latest (and recurring) dead-serious NFL issue: brain damaging concussions. ESPN did a good job, too.

Yet, no media entity has had more regularly scheduled fun with players having their heads bashed in than ESPN. It will recognize, investigate and lament the tragic results of concussions, yet continue to present its "He Got Jacked Up!" segments - high-fives and hee-haws, all around, no less.

The U.S. Basketball team loses. Again. And ESPN knows why: "We no longer play team ball; all our players care about are three-point bombs and spectacular slam-dunks."

But ESPN will continue to load up on highlights of three-point bombs and spectacular slam-dunks, no reason or context other than that. ESPN is always eager to identify what's wrong and even more eager to promote it. ESPN has become one of the worst things to ever happen to our sports.

Tonight, driving home and listening to ESPN Radio... guess who was reporting from Miami on the Super Bowl party scene recap...?

TJ Houshmenzadeh.

ESPN: A once-great network that has become a bad parody of itself.
