3.) "Neon" Deion "Primetime" Sanders, Falcons/Cowboys/Atlanta Braves/49ers/Ravens/Every team ever - Phenomenal Punt Returner, solid outfielder, shutdown corner. Played WR for the Cowboys in '96 during a Michael Irvin suspension and did very well. Amazing speed made him valuable at any position away from the line of scrimmage.
2.) Paul "The Golden Boy" Hornung, Packers - Heisman winning QB at Notre Dame who early on played QB, HB, FB in the NFL. When Lombardi came around he was put at Left HB and became known for his nose for the endzone. Became an effective placekicker, as well. Great lead blocker who could also run effectively with a powerful lower body. Could truly play any position on offense. In an off note he was a stud with the ladies, apparently.... don't know why that was in there. and... 1.) "Slingin'" Sammy Baugh, Redskins - Revolutionized the QB position and took the desperation of the forward pass. Before this an offensive passing attack was almost unheard of. Led the league in Punting, Interceptions, and Passing in a single season. Averaged over 50 some yards a punt in a season and holds the obscure record of 4 Interceptions (not thrown... caught) and 4 TDs in one game. According to an analyst was Peyton Manning, Ray Guy, and Ronnie Lott rolled into one. Maybe the greatest all around player to ever play the game. More proof its an offseason... I just actually did an analysis on a show...

After watching some of the footage and hearing some of these insane stats, like Baugh's, I can't be upset with the absence of some pretty versatile Steelers. Guys like Randle El and Hines Ward just don't hold a flame to some of the Iron Men. A lot of big names have been very versatile, as well. From the "Fridge" pounding the ball to L.T.'s annual TD passes I feel like the NFL Network did a pretty good job focusing on pure versatility and not just studs who could do other things, as well.

Glad to see 'Touchdown' Vrabel and 'Two-way' Troy make the list.
What I love about those guys is that their versatility has been expolited in some absolutely huge games - the 2 TD catches for Vrabel at TE in the SB and Troy Brown playing nickel back against the Colts in the postseason a few years back.

They've been great for a while now, three Super Bowls' worth of great. But only this season have the New England Patriots become The Show, the must-see team of stars, pretty boys and reformed bad boys. Suddenly, the Patriots are not simply great; they're compelling, fascinating, appearing to be almighty and a touch lawless. The Patriots didn't bother with swagger to start this NFL season; they went straight to defiant. Either you're one of them or you're about to get crushed. |
