Steelers Notebook: Tomlin only rookie coach to win debut
Saturday, September 15, 2007
By Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Mike Tomlin did more than become the first Steelers coach in 57 years to win his first game in Cleveland.

Among the five rookie head coaches in the National Football League, he was the only one to win his regular-season debut last weekend when the Steelers beat the Browns.

Four other rookie coaches -- Arizona's Ken Whisenhunt, Miami's Cam Cameron, Oakland's Lane Kiffin and Atlanta's Bobby Petrino -- each lost their first NFL games.

That was in contrast to last season when four rookie head coaches -- Scott Linehan of St. Louis, Sean Payton of New Orleans, Eric Mangini of the New York Jets and Minnesota's Brad Childress -- won in their NFL debuts.

Tomlin will try to make it two in a row when the Steelers (1-0) play the Buffalo Bills (0-1) at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Heinz Field, a game in which the Steelers will wear throwback uniforms as part of their 75th anniversary celebration. Only two Steelers coaches in history have won their first two games -- Bill Cowher (1992) and John Blood (1937).

"I grade myself on wins and losses, so I had a passing grade," Tomlin said. "Was I perfect? Absolutely not. But I'm my worst critic. I don't worry about things of that nature. The big thing was that we won the game. Style points at the end of the day don't matter. I'm glad that we won."

The mentor

Defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau and Bills coach Dick Jauron have never played together or worked as coaches with each other. But they are good friends, going back to when Jauron played his final season in Cincinnati (1980) when LeBeau was the Bengals' secondary coach.

They also had another bond: Jauron was a rookie safety in Detroit in 1973, the year after LeBeau ended his 14-year career with the Lions.

"He's a guy who has really impacted my life in a positive way," Jauron said. "He has kind of been my mentor in this business, to a good degree. Anytime I had decisions in my career, particularly early, he and I talked them through. I just really think a great deal of Dick as both a great person and, obviously, as a coach."

Many happy returns

The Bills might have the best tandem kick returners in the league with cornerback Terrence McGee and wide receiver Roscoe Parrish, who have combined for six scoring returns since 2003.

McGee, a Pro Bowl selection in 2004, has a club-record 4,388 yards and four touchdowns on kickoffs, and ranks second among active returners with a 27.1-yard return average. Parrish, who had an 82-yard punt return for a touchdown last season, had a 74-yard scoring return last week against the Broncos.

"They've got two exciting return men," Tomlin said.

Injury update

Linebacker Marquis Cooper (hamstring) has not practiced for the second week in a row and will not play.

Lol, don't get me wrong, all I'm saying is this guy is still injured and we haven't seen anything from him yet. He's the only questionable decision Tomlin's made up to now in my opinion.

Well...well...for starters we should have drafted Posluszny!!!!

Even though both players (Timmons/Posluszny) have yet to play a full season of pro football, I am a NFL scout and have scouted both of these guys. On top of that, I can read the future. I know where both of these two will be in the next three years. Yes, yes....as you can imagine I am paid nicely for my services.
