NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said teams were notified before the season and reminded multiple times that the league would be cracking down on unbuckled chin straps as an effort to prevent concussions.

dumbass. i guess he and the NFL have a different interpretation of the word "buckled".

I have been lead to believe that they did not have to have it buckled.
In the same manner that they do not have to have a mouth piece, wear knee pads, thigh pads or even hip pads.
