Well I looked it up. And 33 stands for arsenic on the elements chart. The old timer was obviously messin with me. It was the Bungles game last year, so I guess we were all pissed off.

1933 is the year in which the steelers actually became the steelers they were the ptttsburgh pirates...for almost a decade..but the chief got tired of people confusing the football team with the baseball team...so he changed the name in 1933....

The Steelers were established as the Pirates, then changed in 1940 to the Steelers.(Just a note)

I'm going to go with the Rolling Rock answer.
I think it's convenient marketing because the Steelers started in 1933. If it was just the year, it would only have one quote mark - '33 - but the double quotes plus it's in the same font as Rolling Rock makes me think it's an ad for the beer. ![]()

Interesting...I dont understand how effective of an ad it could be though without saying Rolling Rock, maybe its a double meaning with subliminal advertising...?

Rolling Rock's 33 is one of the main parts of their marketing. They've been using it for years. I think it's a natural connection btw RR and the Steelers.
33- the number on the bottle & the year the steelers started Latrobe, PA - where RR is brewed & where the steelers hold training camp
