3 WVU football players charged with drug offenses

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Three West Virginia University football players have been charged with felony possession of marijuana with the intent to deliver.

Linebacker John Holmes, defensive lineman James Ingram and running back Ed Collington were arrested Tuesday night.

As Monongalia County sheriff's Deputy D.W. Wilfong and another officer were responding to a possible domestic disturbance call at an apartment complex, Deputy Wilfong saw three men getting into a car and acting suspiciously, according to police reports.

Deputy Wilfong followed the car and pulled over the driver - identified as Mr. Holmes - for speeding after clocking the vehicle going 39 mph in a 25 mph zone.

After another deputy arrived and began talking to Mr. Ingram and Mr. Collington, a strong odor of marijuana was detected coming from inside the vehicle, according to the reports.

Deputies found packaged bags of marijuana in the vehicle and in Mr. Ingram's right shoe.

After Mr. Ingram allegedly told one of the deputies there were also drugs at his apartment, investigators found more marijuana and bags used to package the drug in a bedroom.

Mr. Collington played in seven games last season. The junior from Penn Hills rushed for 83 yards and two touchdowns.

Mr. Ingram, a sophomore from Cleveland Heights, Ohio, played in five games and recorded two tackles.

Holmes, a junior from Rockledge, Fla., played in all 13 games last season. He recorded 39 tackles, one sack and one fumble recovery.

WVU head coach Bill Stewart said in a statement that he is aware of the arrests.

"I am looking into the situation, gathering facts, and will take appropriate action once all the facts are in," he said.
