KFFL match-ups to exploit !!
Pittsburgh Steelers at Minnesota Vikings
Vikings QB Brad Johnson vs. Steelers pass-rush specialists
Sorry if we are denigrating a winning quarterback and a winning team, but Minnesota Vikings QB Brad Johnson has compiled a 6-1 record since he replaced QB Daunte Culpepper in the second quarter of a loss to the Carolina Panthers on Oct. 30 - but he has been sacked 18 times in 27 quarters. The Vikings finally figured out how to protect Johnson against the St. Louis Rams, who never recorded a sack, but he was felled for a loss of yardage 18 times in 23 quarters prior to last Sunday. Plus, the Vikings have defeated four bad teams - Rams, Lions (twice), Browns and Packers - in their six-game winning streak, with a 24-21 victory against the Giants that Johnson did little to make happen. The Vikings scored touchdowns only on interception, punt and kickoff returns. Enter the Steelers - desperate like the Vikings for a victory that will keep alive their playoff hopes.
The Steelers have not been as vicious in their pass rush this season, but OLBs Clark Haggans and Joey Porter have been streaky in recording sacks. Haggans has one in four of the past five games and Porter, a Pro Bowler, has one in three of the past four. Plus, the Steelers like to send defensive backs toward the quarterback and their defensive ends - Kimo von Oelhoffen and Aaron Smith - are among the very best pairs in the league. Johnson is a big target (6-5, 225 pounds) and at the age of 37, he is not as mobile as most coaches like their quarterbacks to be. Without a strong running game (the Vikings' runners are not bad, but the Steelers' run defense is usually outstanding), Johnson may not have time to pick apart the secondary with deep passes.
Steelers C Jeff Hartings vs. Vikings NT Pat Williams
Hartings went to the Pro Bowl last season, but Williams has been dominant this season. In addition, Hartings has OGs Alan Faneca and Kendall Simmons. However, Williams gets All-Pro DT Kevin Williams (knee) back. Who wins this match up could win the game.
