Default Papa John's to offer Cleveland residents 23-cent pizzas

A Washington Wizards fan holds a 'crybaby' shirt directed toward Cavs star LeBron James.

CLEVELAND -- Papa John's Pizza issued an apology to Cleveland and the Cavaliers for making T-shirts with LeBron James' number and the word "crybaby" under it.
To apologize, Papa John's will sell Cleveland residents a large, one-topping pizza for 23 cents on Thursday. The 23 is an homage to James' jersey number. The company also will donate $10,000 to the Cavaliers Youth Fund.

The pizza chain's T-shirts were featured during the Cavs' games against the Wizards on Friday in Washington. Wizards fans taunted the Cavs, who won the payoff series that night in Game 6.

The shirts started after James complained about hard fouls, and Wizards center Brendan Haywood called him a crybaby.

Bad business move in my opinion. Strictly based off of finacial decisions, if they are worried about losing customers in Cleveland because of the negative effect of those shirts; they shouldn't be. If people really like there pizza they will still go. I think they'll lose more money selling these cheap ass pizzas. Depending on how big of an area they are considering 'Cleveland' I wouldn't be surprised if more people took advantage of this pizza offer than there are Cavs fans.

Nah.. it's good business.

1. Papa John's ALWAYS has coupons or deals for a 'buy one get one free' so 23 cent pizzas won't kill them
2. They make nice with the people they pissed off
3. People who may have not tried their pizzas before are probably saying what the hell, might as well take advantage of a good deal. If 10% come back, they up'd their business.
4. Regular customers are going to jump on the deal
5. They are getting TONS of press because of this and that saves them $$$ in ad dollars.

I'm confused why they would even get involved in this operation to begin with.

Did they not think that sponsoring these shirts would get them in a whole bunch of crap with more than a few people?

Talk to that gas station in Philly that offered 76 Cent Gas. I wonder how much money they lost from that.

It was ridiculous. I drove by 5-6 Papa John's places, and people were waiting as long as 3 hours for a pie. There were hundreds of people at every location. PJ donated everything to charity, so it's a write-off, but they did lose that days worth of business. My guess is that they will reap the long-term benefits from this move, since it was, at minimum, a HUGE advertising coup. My girlfriend is a TV reporter, and she did 4 separate hits from Papa John's that day, all of them lasting at least 3-4 minutes. You can't buy that kind of bang for your buck.

Still, the people who waited were retarded. Even welfare recipients time is more valuable. 3 hours to save 8 bucks? No way...

I was not waiting three hours for a damn pizza. I would rather pay $11 and get the pizza delivered to me in thirty minutes.

And the only way to get the pizza was to walk in, no phone orders.

I think it was very poorly planned. It was also a stupid "apology" gimmick.
