Annika Sorenstam to retire at season's end

In the end, it was quintessentially Annika Sorenstam.

Speaking in a cramped media center at the Sybase Classic, Sorenstam, winner of 72 LPGA titles, announced she would "step away from competitive golf" at season's end following a historic 15-year pro career. The 37-year-old LPGA and World Golf Hall of Fame member kept her composure throughout the 25-minute press conference; it may have been more surprising had she not.

True superstar of the golfing world, male and female. I am a golf tragic and Annika is one of the main reasons why I will watch the LPGA. Her swing is one of the few that a male golfer could watch and strongly consider to model their own on. (I have modelled my backswing on hers for years. Simple but sweet)

She's the ultimate professional and with the way she is playing this season I wouldnt be surprised to see her finish with a major and go out in style.

Some giant shoes will be left for someone to fill. Lorena Ochoa is almost there. Lets hope someone else can step up to provide the level of competition that Annika gave.

Wow....didn't see that coming.

But I am one of her biggest fans also...she is such an intelligent and intense player. Will be strange not to see her on the tour next year.

yes it will. i love watching her play. i dont think besides lorena ochoa that there is anyone else that can promote the LPGA. we know michelle wie cant.

HOws your game TMB? Maybe with a little practice you can step up?

I see a Ochoa and Creamer battle looming. Maybe Pederson can come into the mix as well. Our aussie girl Karrie Webb will also pop up occasionaly to make it interesting.

i like my job now. i like paula creamer, she is very good too.
