Default Steelers begin search for long snapper

Steelers begin search for long snapper
By Scott Brown
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Tuesday, October 28, 2008

The Steelers will work out four players today at their practice facility as they try to fill the void they have at long snapper.

Greg Warren went down with a season-ending knee injury in the Steelers' 21-14 loss Sunday to the New York Giants. Warren, who has been the Steelers' long snapper since 2005, had surgery Monday.

Those vying to replace him are Jared Retkofsky, Tim Lindsey, Derek Rackley and Boone Stutz.

Rackley, who played in the NFL from 2000-07, is the most experienced of the group; the Steelers have the most familiarity with Retkofsky. He signed with the Steelers as an undrafted free agent in 2007 and spent parts of the last two training camps with the team.

Kicker Jeff Reed said Retkofsky impressed him in the short stints he had with the Steelers.

"I know what he can do," Reed said. "I think it's an open competition and whoever snaps the best will get it, but if Jared has a good workout, he'll be here."

Making a few exceptions

Reed said the NFL should consider making roster allowances so teams could dress more specialists for games.

The reason: what they do is so, well, specialized that an injury during a game puts the team in a bind, as the Steelers discovered in the loss to the Giants.

James Harrison had to serve as the Steelers' long snapper on a punt in the fourth quarter because of Warren's injury. His snap sailed over punter Mitch Berger's head and rolled out of the back of the end zone, giving the Giants a game-tying safety.

"You only have one kicker, one punter and one snapper; when something like this happens, it changes the whole game," Reed said. "I'm not saying it's the reason we lost, but to put someone in the fire to long snap (like Harrison) is not an easy job."

Reed said Warren would have been able to finish the game if he hadn't completely blown out his knee.

"He did a lot of stuff to his knee," Reed said. "It's not an injury that he'll recover from real quick."

Statistics misleading

After watching tape of the Steelers' loss to the Giants, inside linebacker James Farrior said the defense did a good job of rushing the quarterback even though the statistics suggested otherwise.

The Steelers entered Sunday's game with an NFL-high 25 sacks but didn't add to that total against the Giants and quarterback Eli Manning.

"Even though we didn't get any sacks, we made Eli feel the pressure a lot," Farrior said. "James Harrison had pressure on him pretty much throughout the game. I think overall our pressure was pretty good."

Extra points

Ryan Clark had his right arm in a sling yesterday after dislocating his shoulder against the Giants. The Steelers' starting free safety is hopeful he will be able to play against the Redskins. ... Farrior, on the difference in Sunday's game: "They executed a little bit better than we did. That's what it boiled down to."

And that's what it comes down to in the end. Not coaching but execution.]

the steelers bland blitz packages didn't seem to apply much pressure.

There is an old saying, (you can believe it or not) that .........If your team wins or loses by 3 or less.....its coaching, If its by 4 or more...its because of the talent on your team.

I do like Jeff Reed's idea of expanding the roster so that teams can carry an extra kicker/punter/long snapper. I'm sure the NFLPA would go along with it because that means more jobs. But would the owners go along with it, since that obviously would increase their costs? I'd like to think they would because the extra cost would be minimal (no more than $2 million), but you never know.

I just don't know that you can justify adding roster spots for stuff like that...

My opinion....Why can't Hartwig or one of the other offensive lineman longsnap?

Why can't Jeff Reed punt?

All the talent on that team and you're telling me we can't find one or 2 guys to do this?

They obviously do have 2 guys who can long snap since James Harrison is the emergency backup. Jerame Tuman was the backup LS when he was here. As for Jeff Reed punting, he probably just isn't any good at it and shanks balls. Not every kicker can punt, and vice versa.

Steelers could sign long-snapper, punter
Tuesday, October 28, 2008
Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Steelers could sign more than a long-snapper this week to replace injured Greg Warren: They have also brought in a punter to possibly replace hobbled Mitch Berger.

Ricky Schmitt, who worked out for the team the week of the Sept. 14 game in Cleveland, could sign with the Steelers if Berger is unable to punt against the Washington Redskins because of a hamstring injury in his left leg.

Also, free safety Ryan Clark, who sustained a dislocated shoulder against the New York Giants, is not expected to play against the Washington Redskins. However, it is not known how long he will be sidelined with the injury.

The Steelers have brought in four candidates to replace long-snapper Greg Warren, who tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee against the Giants and will not play the remainder of the season. Among the candidates: Jared Retkofsky, who was with the Steelers in training camp as a rookie free agent.

Schmitt, who played at Shepherd University, a Division II school near Washington, D.C., signed with the Arizona Cardinals as a rookie free agent in 2007 and was waived at the end of training camp.

He was signed by the San Francisco 49ers this season and waived again at the end of training camp. Schmitt is a left-footed punter.

If they sign Schmitt, that would be awesome - I went to Shepherd.
