Default Roethlisberger earning his keep

Roethlisberger earning his keep
By John Harris
TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Tuesday, October 28, 2008

You can't be the $102 million quarterback when you toss three touchdown passes to beat Jacksonville, then settle for being one of the guys when you throw four interceptions against the New York Giants -- bad offensive line play or no bad offensive line play.

Such is life for Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who must accept the accolades along with the criticism.

You know the story. When Big Ben is good, he's very, very good. When he's bad -- well, just look at Sunday's 21-14 loss.

Roethlisberger's passing numbers were similar to Eli Manning's. Neither quarterback had much of a ground game to work with, so they had to try to win the game with their arms. The difference was in their approach.

Manning attacked the Steelers with a scalpel, taking what the defense gave him and picking his spots downfield. Roethlisberger hacked away at the Giants, looking for big plays even when there were none.

Roethlisberger completed 13 of 29 passes for 189 yards and one touchdown. Manning was 19 of 32 for 199 yards and a touchdown.

Roethlisberger was sacked five times and tossed four interceptions for only the second time in his career. Manning wasn't sacked and didn't have an interception.

If you don't think there's a correlation between sacks and interceptions, you're mistaken. New York's pass rush got inside Roethlisberger's head and led to some poor decisions and ill-fated passes.

"In the first half, more than anything, they were picks, meaning that you have to give credit to the Giants," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said when asked about Roethlisberger's interceptions.

Against the league's better defenses, Roethlisberger has to stop being one of the guys and morph into the $102 million quarterback when the stakes are raised. He has to step up and make plays, because that's what franchise quarterbacks are paid to do.

Two of Roethlisberger's interceptions weren't his fault. One should have been caught by Nate Washington, who had the ball jarrred loose by safety James Butler on second-quarter play. The other pick that was out of Roethlisberger's control was a desperation heave late in the contest when everybody inside Heinz Field was expecting a long pass.

Roethlisberger would like to have the other two interceptions back. Both were forced passes to Hines Ward, who said New York's secondary gave him extra attention because of Santonio Holmes' absence.

"They changed a little bit," Ward said of the Giants. "I was getting more bracketing."

Not only did New York collapse the pocket around Roethlisberger, the Giants also took away his running lanes, eliminating his opportunities to make plays with his feet. Patience, patience and more patience was required from the $102 million quarterback, who tried to do too much but discovered that sometimes less is more.

Way to contradict yourself, Mr. Harris. Of course, I wouldn't expect anything less. Ron Cook should be proud - this rivals his typical hack jobs.

They can usually get away with writing stuff like that because they usually wait until their next article to completely contradict themselves.....To do it in a short article like this and almost get away with it requires talent imo.

This is a weird subject as Ben has already proved his keep after his super bowl victory. Ben is going to be our franchise QB for many years to come and wouldn't want it any other way!

Sometimes even the greatest of qb's have games like this. When you are trying to do a little too much but, hey Ben does not make excuses. He tried to make somethings happened and, it just did not workout of us. Atleast it was not a division foe and, now lets get ready for the skins.

we'll get them next time in the super bowl when we are healthy.. kinda feels like the giants-pats regular season game last year.. we took their best shot and still could have easily won.
