Default Wilfork likely to not be suspended

Quote:
Wilfork talks about meeting

FOXBOROUGH -- Patriots nose tackle Vince Wilfork spoke today about his meeting with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell yesterday to discuss the Patriots defensive lineman's style of play, which has led to fines in the past, and a possible suspension, stemming from an elbow to the head of Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler.

As colleague Mike Reiss reported and as was first reported by the website profootballtalk.com, Wilfork will be not be suspended by Goodell. Wilfork called the meeting productive, but could not say definitively that he would not be fined for the elbow on Cutler.

"I have no idea. I'm still waiting. I walked out pretty happy and satisfied with how it went," said Wilfork.

Wilfork had been fined four times since last season. Most recently, the NFL Network reported that Broncos coaches sent film to the NFL from the Oct. 20 game showing Wilfork elbowing quarterback Jay Cutler after a play.

Here is a transcript of the rest of the session with Wilfork:

How was the meeting?

"The meeting was productive. I think both sides were happy. I got a chance for him to hear my side of my story and how I approach the game. I got a chance to hear what he had to say about the whole situation of my past history and playing football and all that good stuff. I think we both left pretty happy."

Do you expect to be fined or suspended?
"I have no idea. I'm still waiting. I walked out pretty happy and satisfied with how it went."

Did he give you an idea of when it could go down?
"Sometime this week. I don't know. I'm just waiting. When you guys find out I'll find out. I mean it [was] very productive. [He] got a chance to get to know me as a person and as a player also, so we'll see. But at the same time I'm very happy that I got a chance to sit down and have a one-on-one with him. I'm pretty sure there are a lot of things he learned about me, and I learned about him. We'll go forward from here."

Do you rethink your style of play?
"I play hard, and that's one thing I stressed to him -- I'm very passionate about the game. Sometimes it might be too hard, and I told him that. We'll go from here. I told him I'll try to change my style up a little bit, and hopefully, get a better slate. But right now, I got a pretty bad one out there. We hit some areas that needed to be touched on from his standpoint and my standpoint. We both listened to each other, and I think that was the main thing."

What points did he make?

"How hard I play, and at times it's at the end of the play when things happen. At the end of the play taper down a little, but in between the whistle I'm fine."

There are reports you'll avoid a suspension. Do you feel good about that?

"I feel good about the how situation with how we approached and the end result. I just had a good feeling, so hopefully, that's the case."

Last year... Low hit on J.P. Losman

This one is iffy because we've seen A LOT of hits like this over the past few seasons... You make the call.

As much as I'd like to make this a neat, tidy YouTube filled thread... The others are not ON youtube.... conspiracy?

Last year... Poking Brandon Jacobs in the eye

... the guy just plays hard... You make the call.

Hmm. I am having trouble finding the late hit on Jason Witten and
the BLATANT elbow that many analysts say was cheap and done waaay outside of the play...

But the guy just plays hard... whistle to whistle...

Hasn't he already been fined for just about all of these offenses? Shouldn't the NFL have some sort of Double Jeopardy?

I mean what was there to discuss really? Either Godell knew what he was going to do or he didn't. What the hell does he have to hear from Wilfork...

"Vince, we're concerned because we have documentation of numerous blatant and dangerous offenses against you in the past two years."

"Oh ya... about that... Shit, man... I just play hard..."

Patriots' Wilfork fined $35K, but not suspended for hit on Cutler

NFL.com Wire Reports

New England defensive tackle Vince Wilfork was fined $35,000 for a hit on Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler, but will not be suspended, reports NFL Network's Adam Schefter.

Wilfork met Tuesday with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, who decided to forgo a possible suspension, according to a person familiar with the case who asked The Associated Press for anonymity because there was no official announcement.

Wilfork's bank account will take a hit as a result of his actions on Oct. 20 .

The NFL declined comment, noting that fines and suspensions normally are announced on Fridays.

Wilfork was summoned before Goodell after the Broncos claimed tape of New England's 41-7 win Oct. 20 showed Wilfork elbowing Cutler in the helmet.

However, the tapes that were reviewed during the hearing did not show that clearly, upholding New England's contention there was no intent to injure. They also showed Wilfork helping up Cutler and patting him on the back after the play.

Wilfork was fined a total of $35,000 last season for four different incidents. They included hits on Buffalo quarterback J.P. Losman and Dallas tight end Jason Witten. He also was fined for putting a finger inside the facemask of New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs and grabbing the facemask of San Diego's Michael Turner during the AFC Championship Game.

Wilfork has played his entire career for the Patriots since he was drafted in the first round out of Miami in 2004.

He said Wednesday that he didn't know what the outcome of the meeting would be, but felt the session was productive.

"I think both sides were happy," Wilfork said. "He got a chance to hear my side of my story of how I approach the game. I got a chance to hear what he had to say about the whole situation of my past history and playing football and all that good stuff. So I think we both left pretty happy."
