Carucci: Steelers state strong claim in AFC

Matt Cassel was under consistent pressure from James Harrison. (Winslow Townson / Associated Press)

Vic Carucci reports from the Steelers-Patriots game. Check back later for his complete column.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. ó A couple of thoughts floated through my mind as I watched the steady downpour saturate New Englandís Gillette Stadium and the Steelers rip this game away from the Patriots in the second half on their way to a 33-10 victory.

For one, a lot of us (my hand is raised) were way too quick to anoint the Jets as the best team in the AFC after they handed the Titans their first loss of the season last week.

Two, a lot of us (my hand is raised again) were way too quick to anoint Matt Cassel as a top-level NFL starter after he threw for 400 yards in each of his previous two games.

Even if none of their players said so publicly, you had to believe the Steelers might have gotten a little tired of hearing all of the discussion about the Jetsí supremacy in their conference on the theory that the Titans had been the best Ö and the presumption that the Steelers werenít.

Maybe some of us should be rethinking that, especially after the Jets were down big to the Broncos.

The Steelers imposed their will on the Pats, scoring 30 unanswered points after New England built a 10-3 lead in the second quarter. The once-stout Patriots defense has allowed 28 or more points in each of their last three games.

As for Cassel, Pittsburgh never allowed him to find the comfort zone he had in the previous two weeks against the Dolphins and Jets. He wound up fumbling twice ó on hits from linebacker James Harrison, who blew past tackle Matt Light both times ó and throwing two interceptions. Cassel should have thrown another interception, but it was dropped.

So letís hold off on any further talk of the dilemma the Patriots could face after the season when they have to choose between retaining a healthy Tom Brady or losing Cassel in free agency.

(At least the writer is honest about admiting how wrong he was saying the Jets were the best team in the AFC. I about gagged every time I heard that over the last week. - mesa)

It's still far too early to proclaim anything. Besides I want the Steelers to remain focused on the task at hand. There's still three more tough games to play, including a pivotal rematch with Baltimore in M&T Bank Stadium. They haven't won anything, though today's win was big.

I like it better when we fly under the radar. We still have 4 more games and need to take every opponent seriously. These next 3 games are going to be tough, but like I said before will only make us stronger and better for the playoff run.

Right on, stay low Steelers. We saw what happened to the Jets after a few morons proclaimed them to be the best team if the AFC after their win over the Titans.

For some reason, after the Patriots game, the schedule just doesn't look so tough anymore. One game at a time but I truly believe that the Steelers can win out.

I still think the Titans are the #1 team in the AFC. However, they're under the radar right now due to their loss to the Jets.

Today's blowout solidified us in the #2 spot (at least currently) in the AFC.

Most of the "experts" picked the Pats* to win. I love it when the Steelers prove them all wrong.

Our next 3 games will be tough, knock 'em down fights to the very end. The Balitmore game especially will be a brutal game as both teams will be fighting for division title, playoff berths, and seeding.

The 4th game, well, let's just say we'll be playing the Browns.

We need to play consistant high level football from here on out. We beat up on the 'Skins and then looked putrid against the Colts the very next week. That's what makes me nervous about next weeks game. Tomlin needs to keep their feet on the ground and play every game likes it's a playoff game.
