Sloght correction--you're talking about federal INCOME tax. Social Security and Medicare are a huge burden on the working class--they pay from the first dollar and the employer has to match. Then you add on costs like workers' comp and unemployment tax. With all that taken into consideration, the gap between what you take home and what it costs your employer is close to 20% before you even get to state taxes

And if you're middle to upper middle class and pay federal income tax you get shafted even worse.

Correct, I should have clearly stated Federal income Tax when making my reference to only 50% paying it.

Does anyone actually look at their taxes anymore? Seriously...its April, how much money in Taxes have you paid already? I'm already a couple thousand down.

Just over 4 grand as of April 10. That includes federal income, OASDI, Medicare and Colorado state tax. That extrapolates out to about 20 grand by the end of the year. Could be worse - I could still be living back East where they take even more in state and local taxes than they do here.
