What, no love for shuttle launches?

Saw it launch several times when I lived in Florida, even a couple night launches which is spectacular even from 50 miles away.

When I lived in Clermont the shuttle landing would break the sound barrier (slowing down) right around our house. Still the loudest thing I have ever experienced (and I have sat in row two at turn one in Bristol!)

We get the unfortunate pleasure of hearing the sonic boom in San Diego whenever the shuttle lands at Edwards. I only saw unfortunate because Edwards is the back up landing. It is awesome!

But there IS something exceedingly cool about the idea of having your @ss strapped to a hunk of metal with ignited liquid oxygen less than 50 feet away from you pushing you fast enough to break the force of gravity

I would gladly give my left (or right) 'nad to be able to do it

i agree.

and as long as it was by a surgeon and not a tiger or chain link fence or something, i would definitely consider it.

the astronaut farmer is a pretty cool movie, and i can watch Apollo 13 over and over.

i saw the shuttle once strapped on a 747 at vandenberg afb. unfortunately i was there at the time it landed here at white sands.

we used to go to the beach all the time and watch riockets launch sattelites into space though. it is cool. many times when they would launch at night you wouldnt know if it was a rocket or mild earthquake.

I think we should scrap the space program and give the money to welfare recipients so they can buy bigger HDTV's and drink more 40's.

Seriously, anyone who thinks the space program is a waste is a waste of space themselves. The space program is DIRECTLY involved in the creation/invention of:

TV satellite dishes
Medical Imaging
Vision screening systems
Thermometers
Fire suits for firemen
Smoke detectors
Welding mask glass
Automobile design computer programs
Cordless tools
Aerodynamics on multiple applications
Thermal gloves and boots
Shock absorbing helmets
Ski boots
Fail safe flashlights
Invisible braces
Joysticks
Advanced plastics/ceramics

To name but a few things. There are hundreds more.

Minor tile damage found during Atlantis inspections

Engineers at the Johnson Space Center are evaluating a small area of tile damage on the forward part of the shuttle Atlantis' right wing where it joins the ship's fuselage. The nicked tiles, apparently damaged during launch by a debris impact around 106 seconds after liftoff, were spotted during an ongoing heat shield inspection by the Atlantis astronauts.

Shuttle launches are great to attend in Port Canaveral, especially the night launches which end up being like giant tailgate parties. Don't hate on the Space Shuttle!
