Default Steelers' Ryan Clark tackles a home decor assignment

Yonka and Ryan Clark in his man-cave: She says they bleed purple and gold, the colors of LSU where the Clarks went to school.

Fans know Ryan Clark as a Steelers free safety who played a standout season last year.

Last night he gave us a tour of his "man cave," a dedicated room where a man can be alone or socialize with his friends.

Mr. Clark's man cave, in the basement of his two-story home, features two-toned sleeper sofas in brown and taupe, a log-burning fireplace, an elegant pool table and plenty of sports memorabilia. The actual helmet he wore when the Steelers won their sixth Super Bowl, rests on an end table. Pillows with the Louisiana State University logo and tiger decorate one of the sofas.

"This is my man slash if-the-kids-want-to-take-it-over cave," he said, adding that his parents, Sheila and Michael Clark, relax here when they visit from New Orleans.

He also plays Madden and NCAA football video games here with his 8-year-old son, Jordan.

He recently revealed his hideaway because he's a spokesman for a contest that will provide all the technology you would want for a man cave makeover. You supply the man cave.

The grand prize, valued at $10,000, features a 40-inch LCD HDTV, a BluRay home theater system, a notebook PC and an entertainment system. The winner also will receive Verizon FiOS TV, Internet and voice service for one year.

Second prize will be lunch with Mr. Clark, and third prize is a digital prize package valued at $1,000.

Even if you don't win the top prizes, you could snag tickets to a sporting event depending on how many votes your entry receives at www.noplacelikefios.com/mancave

Clark, who will celebrate his 30th birthday on Monday, lives in Baldwin Borough with his wife, Yonka, and three children.

He especially loves the Steelers ESPN Magazine cover, which features "the most attractive safety tandem in the NFL," he said, adding half jokingly that he and his friend Troy Polamalu look forward to modeling for the cover of GQ.

The contest, which kicks off today and runs until Nov. 30, is open to Pennsylvania residents age 18 and older. Participants can register online at www.noplacelikefios.com/mancave or at any of seven FiOS events held here during the contest.

After registering, contestants must upload a video or a photograph with a short explanation of why they deserve a man cave makeover. Contestants also can record their submissions at specially designated Verizon booths at any of seven events held here during the contest. Entries will be judged on their creativity, originality, reasons why they watch FiOS programs and popularity among voters. The first 50 people to upload videos from home also receive a free gift valued at more than $150.

Mr. Clark will appear today at The Mall at Robinson between 5 and 8 p.m. and at South Hills Village Mall on Oct. 31 from 2 to 4 p.m.

A couple of his teammates will make appearances, too. Defensive end Evander "Ziggy" Hood will be at Ross Park Mall Oct. 17 from 2 to 4 p.m. and at Monroeville Mall on Nov. 14 from 2 to 4 p.m. Quarterback Dennis Dixon will appear at The Mall at Robinson from 2 to 4 p.m. on Nov. 28.

People can register for the contest and record their own videos at the following locations:

Today: The Mall at Robinson, 100 Robinson Centre Drive, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Saturday: Oktoberfest in Scott Park in Scott from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Saturday: Carnegie Science Center from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Oct. 17: Ross Park Mall from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Oct. 18, 24 and 25: Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
