Mewelde Moore is often described as a 3rd down back.
What is meant by a 3rd down back? I think what`s confusing is that the term implies that a 3rd down is a standard measurement or play when surely it could, for example, be 3rd and 1 or 3rd and 20. Would not a different play be used In each scenario? Thanks for any help with this.

your "3rd " down back is usually a guy that catches well and is a good blocker.

MM has excellent hands out of the backfield and he's a pretty damn good at picking up the blitz.

Cheers for that fellas
![]() At the risk of sounding dumb(why change now I hear you say!),I`m still not sure I understand why good hands, pass blocking or picking up the blitz should be sononymous with a 3rd down? I mean might not these skills be useful in a 2nd down situation

3rd down more often than not is a passing down. which in turn the defense is more likely to blitz. so you bring in your best receiving back as an option to throw to and if need be he stays in to block . thus the catching and blocking back...

You most likely broadcast your intentions of passing on third down when you insert a specific RB. A thoroughbred RB is not necessarily your best pass blocker, therefore you give up the advantage of your best runner with overuse on 3rd and long and lose the element of surprise if you insert a pass blocker on anything except 3rd and long.
Lots of different tactics and strategies to manage depending on what down and what type of play you want to run. You have a better chance of executing using your best players at their strengths. You may increase your odds of executing a running play on third and long with the gadget of having the pass blocker in, but your chances of running with a pass blocker on first down isn;t fooling many.

Needs to be a jack-of-all trades, and usually is more of an open-field runner type, since he's likely to be out in space. Bettis would NOT be an ideal 3rd down back...
Also, I don't think these guys are usually up to the task of carrying a full load...not 300 carry-type guys.
