Default 2005 Draft Post-Season Review

I think this years draft was a really good one. Here's my view

Miller - Starter for years to come
McFadden - Soon to be Starter, could be a Pro-Bowl CB in a few years
Essex - Everyone said it was a bad pick, but he was a capable back up
Gibson - Gone to Phins, Didn't do anything
Wallace - Didn't see much, but did contribute on ST
Kemoeatu - Could compete with Simmons for Starting role next season
Nua - Had to sign him from the PS because the 49ers were looking at him
Herron - Played good in preseason, and did pretty well for the Packers this year
Frazier - Contributed on ST and is good depth
Washington - Made a great catch, and deflected a great catch against Broncos
Warren - Did a great job as LS this year, and only messed up once

7 out of 11 rookies made an impact on the team this year. If you look back at the 2004 draft, we only kept 5 out of 8 people drafted, and wasted a 4th and a 5th. Foote, Taylor, Haynes, and Haggans were 4th or 5th round picks. Whenever you can make use of every pick, I think that shows a great Scouting Organization.

Overall Grade: B+

I really like Kemoeatu, he is my kinda O lineman. A real mauler, he needed anger management for cryin out loud! I'd like to see what he could do with the starting O.

Drafts have definitely been better the last several years.

If it is your picks at the top of the draft that usually provide game deciders, it is interesting to see how the Steelers #1 and #2 picks went since the last SB appearance and after the Donohoe/Cowher power struggle was resolved following the 1999 season.

The 1996-99 selections had only 2 quality picks (Chad Scott & Alan Faneca) and several absolute busts.

1996 #1 - Jamin Stephens (OT) #3 - Steve Conley (LB) No #2 pick

1997 #1 - Chad Scott (DB) #2 - Will Blackwell (WR)

1998 #1 - Alan Faneca (OL) #2 - Jeremy Staat (DT)

1999 #1 - Troy Edwards (WR) #2 - Scott Shields (DB)

Donohoe Leaves

After Donohoe got canned, all of the #1 picks have produced starters, including a number of Pro Bowl quality players. The only true bust was Alonzo Jackson, with the jury still out on whether Coclough will pan out.

2000 #1 - Plaxico Burress (WR) #2 - Marvel Smith (OL)

2001 #1 - Casey Hampton (DL) #2 - Kendrell Bell (LB)

2002 #1 - Kendall Simmons (OL) #2 - Antwaan Randle-El (WR)

2003 #1 - Troy Polamalou (DB) #2 - Alonzo Jackson (LB)

2004 #1 - Ben #2 - Ricardo Coclough (DB)

2005 #1 - Heath Miller (TE) #2 - Bryant McFadden (DB)

If you want to chart how the Steelers fell off in the '80s and mid-90s, this link to drafts from 1982-2004 provides an answer when you review Steelers draft picks for those periods.

Yeah, drafting has been WAY better as of late...and I'd give the '05 class an A, though. 2004 was nice at the top and dropped like a rock. Ben, Coke, Starks, then...

Nate Adibi
Bo Lacy
and it only got worse.
