Default Logan also released

The Steelers have released veteran free safety Mike Logan but they have 25 days to re-sign him or face the prospect of a grievance because he is injured.

The Steelers released Logan in order to help them get under the $94.5 million salary cap before they knew the deadline had been extended for the second time from last night until Wednesday. Teams can be over the salary cap until then unless a new collective bargaining agreement is reached in the NFL.

Logan had a $1 million salary for 2006 that will be taken off the Steelers' books until they re-sign him. He had surgery recently to repair a knee injury that occurred in the Super Bowl.

I'm suprised, considering how if Hope leaves, he's started at the position before and is much needed depth. I hope he comes back.

This may be an indicator as to where the Steelers priorities lie in the offseason. If they are willing to let Logan hang out there for a month, then maybe Hope is a serious concern of theirs, and they may pay big bucksto keep him. Until FA opens up, we can't know, but this move sounds risky if they DON'T have some kind of deal in the works with either of them.

Isn't it very possible for Logan to file a grievance since he was released while being injured?

Personally, I see us bringing the guy back, but just curious?

It's more likely they have an oral agreement with him to hang for a month, but the fact that they'd do something risky like that makes me think Hope is on their list of VIS (Very Important Signings).

yes. it was a calculated risk the steelers felt they had to take. going off suits thinking regarding hope, now is not the time for the steelers to try to save an extra $500,000 or so in letting hope walk. its been a while since woodson and lake, and id like to see the team try to get back to that point. id also like to see them bring deshea back (while he really hasnt been a top 15 cb he has bailed the steelers out of releasing scott and washington and he did it at a very favorable price. i would like to see him and mcfadden rotate between starting and nickle cb. and give mcfadden 1 more year before he takes over full time. deshea is entering his prime (not primetime) but hes descent and a contributor on a sb winning defense. he went 15-1 in his 1st year as a starter. theres something to be said for that.

Ed Bouchette, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports the Pittsburgh Steelers intend to re-sign free agent's FS Mike Logan and SS Russell Stuvaints.

Logan recently needed knee surgery stemming from a Super Bowl injury and is likely to re-sign with the Steelers. By releasing him, the Steelers temporarily cleared about $1 million in salary cap room.

The Steelers are expected to re-sign Logan not only because they face losing safety Chris Hope as a free agent, but to avoid facing a grievance for releasing an injured player.

Well this is excellent news! I really like Mike Logan. I would hate to see him leave.
