Default Tomlin addresses team about off-field conduct

Tomlin addresses team about off-field conduct
Monday, April 19, 2010
By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Coach Mike Tomlin spoke to his players Monday morning before their first spring practice that included quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, and a few said it became plain to them that the Steelers would have "zero tolerance" toward any more off-field shenanigans.

"We were told early this morning, either you get in line or you get kicked out of line, either you'll be traded or you're not going to be here," tackle Willie Colon said as he walked off the practice field at the Steelers' training facility. "If your conduct is going to play a part of you not being a good football player or any part of this NFL, they're going to get rid of you. So my job is to be a football player and conduct myself respectfully off the field."

Tomlin denied saying those exact words to his players and Colon would not say who spoke those words.

"It was said," Colon remarked.

"It doesn't need to be said, you just watch the actions that's going around us. There is zero tolerance for anything."

Defensive end Aaron Smith related a similar story.

"We took it different ways," Smith said of the coach's talk, "depending on how you interpreted it. But after what we've seen gone on, there's not going to be much tolerance for stuff around here."

Roethlisberger joined his teammates for their first of 14 permitted spring practices but declined to speak afterward. However, he did give a few individual reporters a friendly greeting when he saw them later.

Roethlisberger and his teammates await word from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and/or Steelers president Art Rooney on possible discipline they may mete out to the quarterback following a sexual assault claim lodged against him March 5 by a woman in Georgia. Authorities in Georgia have decided not to charge him, but Rooney made it clear that he will be disciplined. Most suspect that to be some kind of suspension for a number of games to start the 2010 season.

The Steelers disputed a report on Yahoo.com that Goodell would announce the discipline Monday or Tuesday. Rooney said last week the discipline would not be announced until after this week's NFL draft.

Steelers: Zero tolerance for off-field misconduct
Buzz up!By John Grupp, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Monday, April 19, 2010
Last updated: 2:37 pm

Offensive lineman Willie Colon, who was with Ben Roethlisberger in Georgia last month the night of the alleged sexual assault, said the Steelers were informed before practice today there is "a zero tolerance" in regard to any off-field misconduct.

"We were told early this morning either you get in line or you get kicked out of line," Colon said. "You are going to be traded or you're not going to be here. If your conduct is going to play a part in you not being a good football player, they are going to get rid of you. ...There is a zero tolerance, not only with the NFL but with the Steelers."

Colon, speaking publicly for the first time since the March 5 incident, wouldn't say whether it was a coach, a player or front office personnel who gave the early-morning ultimatum.

Colon, a fifth-year veteran, was part of Roethlisberger's entourage last month in Milledgeville, Ga. Charges were not filed against Roethlisberger.

Colon, who was on the dance floor in the building when the alleged assault took place, said it is difficult having his name linked to the incident.

"It's tough from the aspect that I have a mom and a sister and I have female family," Colon said. "They have to read negative so-called things that I've said. ...The bottom line to the situation is all we can do is come to work. That's what I'm here to do. I'm a little annoyed that everybody keeps talking for this football team. Our job is to be football players. That's what we plan to do."

Colon said he and his teammates support Roethlisberger.

"Whatever he has to go through, I'm going to stand behind him, not only as a teammate, but as his friend and a brother," Colon said. "I'm going to make sure he gets through it."

Tomlin's a day late and a dollar short with his rebuke but he had to do something.

Zero Tolerance....yeah right.

Be careful what you say Mike...you just may have to back it up. How far down the morality or conduct chain is this going to go?
So, does that apply to coaches in the future that may send inappropriate e-mails? I know that coach is gone, but will Mike "Unleash Firing" if anything embarassing happens to one of his coaches as well?

I'm sorry, but I'm missing what football used to be like. This modern age of football stinks.

If I sent a porno email at work out like Arians did I'd be terminated immediately. Of course given my opinion of Arians pass happy offense I'm hoping he does send another one out.

hopefully the players get the message and straighten up.
u can have a team full of superstars, but if they're not disciplined, they wont get too far on talent alone.

im happy there is more emphasis on being disciplined not only on the field, but off the field as well. sure people say "they're here to play football... what they do off the field is none of our business... so what... " etc

but sometimes, off the field behavior carries on, and can even distract or somehow alter and affect a players focus on the field.

hopefully the team does become more disciplined, not only as players but as people as well. that should help at increasing our chances of wining.
