Civic Arena's future could be known by Thursday
Tuesday, September 14, 2010 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette The fate of the Civic Arena could be decided this week. The city-Allegheny County Sports & Exhibition Authority board is scheduled to vote Thursday on whether to demolish the 49-year-old landmark to make way for redevelopment. The SEA is owner of the building, sometimes referred to as the Igloo. SEA Executive Director Mary Conturo would not speculate on which way the board would vote. "All I can tell you is that it's on the agenda," she said. The SEA vote comes as a consultant for the agency completed a report which in essence calls for the demolition of the structure. At the same time, Reuse the Igloo, the group seeking to save the arena, is pitching a plan to reuse the building for bowling, annual Christmas and Halloween-related events. bicycle polo, book festivals, weddings and other celebrations.
