Default Mehno: Quit whining about NFL fines

Mehno: Quit whining about NFL fines

Would it be easier if James Harrison just set up direct deposit with the NFL so commissioner Roger Goodell could extract this weekís fine?

For all the wailing about the Pittsburgh Steelersí most famous scofflaw, they still played tackle football in the NFL last weekend.

There were plenty of hard hits, and almost all of them were legal.

The ones that werenít drew the leagueís attention.

The topic has had the talk show lines melting, but it really isnít complicated. Discern what the rules are, and stay within them.

There will be a period of adjustment, just as there was several years ago when the NHL decided to call obstruction fouls by the rulebook.

Two things, though:

l Donít make the argument that the Steelers of the 1970s would have been shackled by todayís rules.

The Steelers didnít play that way. Nobody did then. Players didnít launch themselves at other players, like missiles. They tackled.

The game was still tough and physical, but techniques were different.

So were players. You donít see a lot of 218-pound tight ends like Randy Grossman was for the 1974 Steelers.

Current backup quarterback Byron Leftwich, listed at 250 pounds, is 12 pounds lighter than the biggest offensive lineman (Jon Kolb) from the Steelersí first Super Bowl team.

l Donít complain that players are being fined for plays that didnít draw a penalty flag.

There are 22 players moving on every play. There are seven officials watching them on a surface thatís 100 yards long and 160 feet wide. They canít see everything.

TV cameras can offer other views, and sometimes the penalties come from those angles.

In the meantime, stop the whining. It clashes with black and gold.

this guy's full of **** because he's not taking into account things such as players turning their helmets into the other player at the last second, momentum, diagnosis's of tackles that are wrong, etc...
Not all of these tackles were malicious and illegal.
The only one that actually clearly looked illegal and on purpose was the Merriweather hit of a few weeks ago, and thats on N.E.

Ive said this in previous posts but gonna get worse before it gets better...its already too much in the head of our players which is not a good thing and a obvious disliking(singling out) for our team. Hope my opinion is wrong!

Sometimes sportswriters state something because they do not know what they are talking about - other times it is to say something controversial to draw page hits - sometimes it is both - whatever the reason, this guy is a fool

John Mehno really needs to get a clue and it definitely sounds like he has never played a down of football in his life. The first weekend of football after Roger and Ray went crazy even showed how certain defensive players had to adjust their games due to being afraid of drawing a fine or possible suspension.

Yes there will be adjustments from defensive players, but it doesn't mean it's good for the game. I would rather have seen this issue addressed in the off season and give the players more notice and time to adjust rather than do it during the season.

Players actually get hurt more when they jump up for a ball and fall down and they land on the back of their head... I bet the NFL will start fining players who accidently give themselves concussions lol...

Well...just had a hit on austin collie for the colts that they called a flag on....he was not a defenseless receiver like they called cause he had 2 feet down after the reception...looked like an obvious fumble to me but they ruled it an incomplete pass. I guess andy reid was afraid to challenge it bec of this rule. I hope collie is ok but damn...everything was legal in this instance. The nfl is screwed and this could end up costing the eagles the game cause the eagles recovered it.... he was not a defenseless receiver!!

John Mehno is an idiot. People that want to take the violence out of the game should just go watch Bocce` or bowling.
