Temps in 50s, rain threaten Classic
By Rob Rossi, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Monday, December 27, 2010
http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pitt...rce=rss&feed=8

Early forecasts call for unseasonably warm temperatures and rain Saturday, but the NHL plans to exhaust all options to play the 2011 Winter Classic hockey game at Heinz Field this weekend.

An NHL official confirmed Sunday that a "long window" exists in which to play the outdoor game between the Penguins and Washington Capitals, scheduled for 1 p.m. New Year's Day.

If the game cannot be played Saturday, the league has reserved Heinz Field for Sunday and will attempt to play the game then, according to an e-mail from Jamey Horan, NHL vice president of player development/event communications.

If the game cannot be played Saturday or Sunday, it will be rescheduled for later in the season in Consol Energy Center. No details were available regarding ticketing or refunds.

According to AccuWeather, Saturday's high temperature will be 53 degrees. The normal high for Jan. 1 is 36 degrees. The forecast calls for a high of 41 degrees Sunday.

Unseasonably warm temperatures are not a primary concern because of an elaborate refrigeration system that cools the outdoor ice rink, NHL operations facilities manager Dan Craig told the Tribune-Review last week.

Regardless of the air temperature, the playing surface will be kept at 22 degrees, Craig said.

"The aluminum flooring and refrigeration system is very efficient," he said. "We can tweak the (ice) temperature within 30 minutes."

Steady rain, however, can cause problems. It won't immediately freeze, and the accumulating water could flood the rink's surface, Craig said. After the water does freeze, it could create an uneven surface, possibly risking the players' safety, he said.

AccuWeather is calling for three hours of rain and a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms Saturday. The forecast worsens Sunday, with 12 hours of rain in the forecast, according to AccuWeather.

"There are a lot of variables we have to balance to get where we want to be, and we are always keeping in mind players' safety," Craig said.

In addition to rain, he said, swirling winds and the reflection from sunshine present other potential problems for the outdoor rink, which is expected to be completed today.

A practice day is scheduled for Friday, but Craig said Thursday is an "important" date in the rink preparation process.

"December 30th is when we dial in," he said. "We'll be at the level of ice we want at that point, and we'll start to make adjustments accordingly."

Keeping my fingers crossed. I think they're going off of Pittsburgh meteorologists though, and that could be a good thing since they are often wrong.

The Weather Channel is forecasting 44 and 40% chance of rain on Saturday; High of 36 and 40% chance of snow showers on Sunday....so I hope they are right.

Would suck to just have the whole thing cancelled. HBO would be pissed I bet lol.

I can still recall long-time WTAE newsman Paul Long, who hated the cold weather, handing-off to weather-gal Nanette Chapman one Christmas Eve many years ago, by innocently-but-unexpectedly saying '... Nan... I'm dreaming of a hot Christmas...' in his low voice:
for a few silent, uncomfortable seconds, nobody in the studio knew what to do, resulting in many Red-faces by those on-camera

Yep that would suck big time. I've been looking forward to this game for a long time. The Pens playing on the field where the Steelers play - how F'n cool is that?

I'm thinking it will all work out, and thinking even Jordan might make this his first game of the season. It's meant to be since the numbers of the date of the game and the one he wears on his back match up. It's meant to be.

I really hope the game is played and is entertaining and would especially love to see one of the Pens take on the mentality of one of our linebackers and knock Ovi the shit out.

C'mon New Year ... don't let me down!

how-about Meunky, taking a run at Engelland, getting the worst of the hit, then trying to stir-up something, the result being Engie knocking banana-crap outta the Great Ape

to my surprise, the local sports-radio here in central Fl this morning was talking about how the weather in Pittsburgh could affect the game going-off as scheduled

Penguins vs. Capitals Winter Classic Preview

WHEN: Jan. 1, 2011 - 8:00 pm | WHERE: Heinz Field
WATCH: NBC | LISTEN: Pens HD Radio, 105.9 FM

Pittsburgh Penguins
Overall:
25-11-3-53
Home: 13-6-1-27
Road: 12-5-2-26

Washington Capitals
Overall:
22-12-5-49
Home: 14-4-4-32
Road:
8-8-1-17

The Washington Capitals have long been famous for their offensively-gifted snipers and their ability to score goals. But as the saying goes, “Defense wins championships,” and that’s the mentality head coach Bruce Bordreau has adapted as of late.

And it’s been working for them. Since their eight-game losing streak, which spanned from Dec. 2 to Dec. 18, the Capitals have gone 4-0-1 in their past five games. They’ve surrendered just 12 goals in their last seven games and are on a roll.

Entering the highly-anticipated 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic, the Penguins have a three-point lead in the Eastern Conference standings over the Capitals.

Their top guns have been chipping in to help spur the Capitals’ surge, most notably Alex Ovechkin. He’s scored in two-straight games after tallying just twice in the previous 19 games. Their depth players have also been getting on the scoresheet, with rookie Jay Beagle also scoring on Tuesday to give him two goals in four games.

Each of their 22-year-old goaltenders is making solid cases to be named the starter between the pipes on Saturday in Pittsburgh. Semyon Varlamov just backstopped his team to a 3-0 whitewashing of Montreal on Tuesday, while Michal Neuvirth has a 14-6-3 record, a .911 save percentage and a 2.56 goals-against average on the season.

Defenseman Jeff Schultz made his return to the lineup against the Canadiens after missing nine games with a fractured right thumb. They’ve sorely missed the consistency of the 6-foot-6, 225-pound blueliner, who won the NHL’s Plus-Minus Award in 2009-10 with a plus-50 rating. He joins Mike Green, who has also been playing a more all-around game for Washington after tallying a combined 149 points over the past two seasons. The recently-acquired veteran Scott Hannan and second-year sensation John Carlson round out the defense.

  • Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin both enter the game with the exact same number of career points (571), but Crosby has played 25 less games. Since they both entered the league in the 2005-06 season, no other player has that many points. Only San Jose’s Joe Thornton comes close with 542 points.
  • The game marks Pittsburgh’s second-ever outdoor game. But only eight current Penguins played in the elements. For Washington – which has never played outdoors – only one player participated in a game played outside. Jason Chimera played for the Oilers in the 2003 Heritage Classic.
  • Seven of the past 16 games between the Penguins and Capitals have been decided in overtime or a shootout, including three games of the seven-game series in the 2009 Eastern Conference Semifinals. The Penguins hold a 4-3 record in those seven overtime contests, the latest of which was the 3-2 shootout win in Washington on Dec. 23.
  • Since Crosby and Ovechkin entered the league, the Penguins and Capitals played each other 31 times. Of those games, 17 were decided by one goal or in overtime. The Penguins hold the slight advantage in such games with a nine wins and eight losses or overtime losses.
  • In the past 26 games, Sidney Crosby notched 50 points (26G-24A), and he completed his impressive career-high 25-game scoring streak. In Ovechkin’s previous 26 games, he tallied 25 points (6G-19A).
  • In the four previous outdoor NHL games, the home team holds a 1-3 record. The only home team to win was the Boston Bruins, who defeated Philadelphia 2-1 in overtime a year ago.

Play Simple
: There’s a possibility of rain on Saturday, which will have an effect on the Penguins’ game. Not only will a downpour make visibility a problem, but the ice surface won’t be as smooth as an indoor rink, which could cause a lot of funny bounces and stoppages. The team will need to focus on making the simple plays, whether it be dumping the puck instead of making a pretty pass or playing more conservatively in the offensive zone.

Adapt Quickly: The Penguins are used to playing in an arena that holds up to 18,087 people. On Saturday, they’ll be playing in front of 70,000 fans in a completely different setting. The atmosphere may be overwhelming for some of the players, and they’ll need to adjust to their surroundings quickly.

my winter classic experience wasnt that great.

its bad enough i only get about 15 (regular season) penguins games on tv a year (if im lucky and theyre doing good), but my direct tv lost all local channels on new years eve.

no dick clark, no ball drop, no parade, no bowl game and no winter classic.

luckilly it was real easy finding an excellent stream that was flawless. still... hockey is meant for big screen.

tough loss.

i must say though, after watching the final episode of 24/7 on weds i had much more appreciation for the classic.

what an excellent series. ive seen all episodes twice and really wanna watch all 4 in succession tomorrow but i'll probably just get the dvd once it is out.

lots of cool inside/behind the scenes stuff. for some reason i was almost stunned with both coaches cracking open a brew right there after the post game speech.

that is banned from baseball, and you never see that in football.

but they are hockey. hockey is balls out. i shouldnt have been suprised at all.

Trade ya?

fiancee is suffering thru chemo, so I spent the week before the Classic, watching a stream of the rink being built when she didn't need my attention
(I don't know which surprised me more ~ the Penguins hosting something like that, or the fact that as a fan since 1972, I wouldn't be at the game)

3 hours before game-time, I begin suffering from an intestinal flu (guess what that means), and shortly after face-off, I began tossing my cookies, so after spending 8 days watching the rink constructed, I saw about 6 minutes of the game:
NBC's fetish for showing over-head shots made me even-worse, so once the puking began, I went straight to bed

making matters-worse, my fiancee got it 2 days later, despite the fact that we avoided each-other once I began feeling ill because we knew she'd be very susceptible ~ by mid-Monday, she was hospitalized, taking saline & anti-biotic's from an IV-drip, and she was finally released a few hours ago

Happy-fuggin'-New Year
