Coach Bylsma also talked about Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.

Bylsma was asked about Crosby's return to Pittsburgh.

"The schedule with Sidney, we thought he would return sometime this week. There wasn't a definite date or definite day. Right now, I haven't had a lot of contact. He's in contact with our trainer just to let him know how he's feeling and so forth. There really isn't a time frame as far as we're concerned at this point, of getting him back into town and any kind of timetable."

Bylsma was also asked if the coaching staff has planned for not having Crosby for the rest of the season.

"That really has not been a topic of conversation or a thought. Certainly, when the doctor told us he had a mild concussion, we were expecting this not to last this long and it was certainly our concern about making sure his health is full when he comes back to play. But really, we haven’t gone down a label of time. We certainly want to make sure we go through the necessary steps, and he gets returned to health and he’s symptom-free and then progressing toward what the doctor recommends with exercise and so forth. But (we haven’t) gone down that road."

Bylsma was then asked about Malkin's situation.

"Given the severity of the injury right now we're taking some time to let his knee calm down a little bit, get doctors' opinions and options for what he has going forward. It's not a lot of urgency at this point in time to rush into a certain decision."

12:39 PM:
Coach Bylsma said that Kunitz and Dupuis were maintenance days and are expected to be on the ice Tuesday and in the lineup against Columbus that evening.

Bylsma added that Mark Letestu had surgery on his left knee over the weekend and is still expected to be out for 6 weeks.

"Players not on the ice today that played last game, Kunitz and Dupuis, were having maintenance days," Bylsma said. "(I) expect them tomorrow to be on the ice in the morning.

"Arron Asham is still out and day-to-day with an upper-body injury.

"Mark Letestu was able to have his surgery this past weekend, successful surgery. He has started his rehab. It's still on the same timetable, 4 to 6 weeks."

Yeah, I heard that too.

I'd rather him take his time though, instead of rushing back like Savard did.

Teams doing relatively ok without him. As long as they don't go on a horrible losing streak or anything, they'll be fine.

There's no guarantee Sid will be back at all. He left the team and is back home.

Pens got 14 pts on 8th place....for however long that will last.

Will it be enough? I don't know - we still got Malkin's $8.7M to find another player or two before the deadline.

This year already sucks, the sports gods have abandoned us.. In the first month both Sid and Geno have been severely injured, Letestu is out for quite a while and the Steelers lost the SB. It can't get much worse than that.

It can always get worse lol.

From my understanding, Crosby went home to do a little bit of light training and exercises there. I don't think it's supposed to be any kind of extended thing.

And yes, there is always the trade deadline. No need to panic yet.

Malkin fallout: Where do the Pens go from here?
Saturday, 02.05.2011 / 2:37 PM
By David Kalan - NHL.com Staff Writer
http://www.nhl.com/ice/post.htm?id=260

While it would be silly to assume Pittsburgh will benefit from Evgeni Malkin's ACL tear, which could very well sideline him for the remainder of the season, his injury could add a significant wrinkle to the upcoming trade deadline for the Penguins -- both in terms of flexibility and terms of need.

With Malkin out, Sidney Crosby's slow return from a concussion and Mark Letestu's current absence with an upper-body injury, the Penguins are currently missing three of their top four centers and become more likely to look at adding depth down the middle before the Feb. 28 trade deadline. One player expected to be on the block who could be appealing to Pittsburgh GM Ray Shero is New Jersey center Jason Arnott, who has postseason experience and a championship pedigree that could make him an attractive short-term fix for the Pens' injury woes.

If Pittsburgh decides it is comfortable at center once Crosby and Letestu are back, they could feasibly search for help on the wing at the deadline. When Crosby is healthy, he and Jordan Staal still provide very formidable pivots to anchor the Penguins' top two lines, meaning the considerable cap space opened by Malkin's injury -- roughly $8.1 million -- gives Pittsburgh an enormous amount of flexibility if it chooses to address other needs. The only catch for the Penguins is that the added cap flexibility only will help them this spring as Malkin and his cap hit will be back next season. As a result, any major acquisition would have to be moved after the season or be in the final year of its contract.

With Marc-Andre Fleury in net and a solid defensive corps, the wing would seem the most likely area for Shero to attend to if he chooses to do so. Where Pittsburgh would go is anyone's guess, though if Edmonton chooses to move Ales Hemsky or Dustin Penner, the Penguins could certainly make the numbers work. And if Shero truly wants to dream big, could a run at Calgary's Jarome Iginla be in the mix?

There are several options of where the Penguins can go from here, but if they follow the organization philosophy they've maintained since acquiring Marian Hossa for a Cup run in 2008, the only certainty is that Pittsburgh, with its newfound cap space and ailing lineup, is unlikely to stand pat.

Pens' GM Shero dismisses Crosby reports
By Rob Rossi, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Tuesday, February 8, 2011

Monday played out like a game of "Fact or Fiction" regarding concussed Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby.

The facts, provided by coach Dan Bylsma, were a lot less attention-grabbing than the fiction provided by speculation on the Internet that Crosby would not play again this season.

"That really has not been a topic of conversation or a thought," Bylsma said. "When the doctor told us he had a mild concussion, we were not expecting it to last this long."

Crosby has not played, practiced or engaged in any strenuous activity since Jan. 5, when he was driven from behind into the boards at Consol Energy Center by Tampa Bay defenseman Victor Hedman. He had also been clipped from the blind side by Washington Capitals left wing David Steckel during the NHL Winter Classic on New Year's Day.

Multiple sources said over the weekend that Crosby would not resume normal exercise activity for seven to 10 days, and that the Penguins do not expect him to play against until at least March.

Nobody within Crosby's camp has ruled out the possibility he could miss the remainder of this season, including the playoffs - but only because recovery from concussions is impossible to predict.

Penguins general manager Ray Shero said "nothing has changed" regarding the status of Crosby, who is not symptom free and remains cleared for only light exercise.

Bylsma said Crosby, the NHL leader in goals and points at the time of his injury, will return to Pittsburgh "sometime this week" after spending the last several days resting at home in Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia.

"There wasn't a definite date or day," Bylsma said. "Right now there's not a lot of contact; he's in contact with (Penguins head trainer Chris Stewart) every other day just to let him know how he's feeling.

"There's really not a time frame at this point for getting him back into town, and any kind of timetable (for a return to playing)."

The Penguins must keep playing without Crosby and fellow former scoring-champion center Evgeni Malkin, who is out for the season because of torn right knee ligaments. They are also down third-line center Mark Letestu, a promising rookie who had posted 10 goals.

Combined, their three injured centers have produced 57 goals, or 34.8 percent of their offense.

Even for a squad that rated second overall at 2.22 goals against, playing without players who have contributed that much offense seemingly should be a concern.

"You know, there's not a lot of worry offensively," left wing Matt Cooke said. "We're in a situation right now where we have to try to approach it like we have to win games 1-0 - not because we can't score, but because we're giving ourselves the best chance to win by playing that way."

Arguably, the Penguins' best chance to create scoring chances rests on the shoulders of Kris Letang, Alex Goligoski and Paul Martin. This trio of offensively gifted defensemen has combined for 19 goals and, more notably, 69 assists.

Letang rates first, Goligoski second and Martin fourth among currently healthy Penguins in terms of assists.

Letang said they can "do a better job of reading the play and joining the rush."

"But that's a tough game to play," he said. "If you start taking chances, and you end up trailing, that's when you need to score goals — and we don't have Geno and Sid, so (comebacks) will be tougher."

Call-ups Keep Playoff Mentality
Monday, 02.07.2011 / 1:40 PM / Features
By Tony Jovenitti
http://penguins.nhl.com/club/news.ht...id=DL|PIT|home

Penguins fans might not be aware of it, but Tuesday’s tilt with Columbus is Game 7. So is Thursday’s game against Los Angeles.

OK, they might not be actual playoff Game 7s, but don’t tell players like Dustin Jeffrey, Eric Tangradi and Tim Wallace.

“I have to approach every game like this is my Game 7,” Jeffrey said.

The Penguins recently called up Jeffrey, Tangradi and Wallace from their top minor-league affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in the wake of a string of injuries to forwards Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Mark Letestu and Arron Asham.

With Malkin being sidelined for a while and Letestu out four to six weeks, the WBS call-ups are looking to take advantage of their extended opportunity.

“When you’re young, you need to take these opportunities and run with it,” Tangradi said. “When guys are hurt, you step up a little bit, take the role and run with it.”

Both Jeffrey and Tangradi spent time in Pittsburgh earlier in the season, prior to their most recent call-up. But this is Wallace’s first soiree in the NHL this season.

“Obviously the system’s the same, so maybe it’s a little easier transition than other teams,” Wallace said.

Head coach Dan Bylsma frequently stresses that the WBS Penguins play the exact same style of hockey as their parent club, so any player making the upward move will know exactly what is expected of him.

“I think it makes it really easy that you don’t have to worry about the forecheck or the defensive zone coverage, you just have to worry about playing the game,” Jeffrey said.

Jeffrey has been called up six times this season, but being shuttled back-and-forth doesn’t affect his play.

“You know the system, it’s been pounded into your head since training camp Day 1,” Jeffrey said. “It’s easy to transition that way.”

But even with key players out for extended periods of time, nobody is getting complacent with their spot in the lineup.

“None of the guys from Wilkes-Barre, myself included, are guaranteed to be here very long,” Jeffrey said.

“You just try to take every day as it goes,” Wallace said. “You don’t want to focus on next month or next week. You just go every day and do your job. Hopefully, you can stay as long as possible.”

Kunitz added to Penguins' list of injured players
By Josh Yohe, TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Wednesday, February 9, 2011

Another day brought another injury to an important Penguins forward. Chris Kunitz did not play Tuesday against Columbus because of a lower body injury. He is listed as day-to-day. Kunitz missed Monday's practice, but coach Dan Bylsma said at the time that Kunitz would play against the Blue Jackets. His injury was obviously more serious than originally believed. The Penguins played without their top three goal scorers in Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kunitz.

• Pittsburgh native R.J. Umberger wasn't the only person in the Columbus organization disappointed with Super Bowl XLV. Columbus coach Scott Arniel, a native of Kingston, Ontario, always has been a big Steelers fan and was hoping to catch the Steelers' victory parade. The parade would have been yesterday morning, right when the Blue Jackets were in town. Arniel said most people in Kingston were Dallas Cowboys fans when he was growing up, but he always preferred the Steelers. "I thought Ben (Roethlisberger) was going to pull it off at the end," he said. "It was disappointing."

• Comcast is providing an NHL Center Ice "freeview" from Feb. 14-20 for all digital customers (channels 771-784 or 531-544, depending on your system).

• The Penguins and American Red Cross will hold a blood drive at Consol Energy Center on Feb. 27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Donors will receive a jersey-style T-shirt (while supplies last), will be eligible for prizes and will have an opportunity to meet Penguins broadcasters and alumni.

• Right wing Arron Asham remained out of the lineup with an upper body injury.
