Default ESPN Tuesday Morning QB Bad Predictions Review

Not winning in Dallas was disappointing, but Gregg Easterbrook's review of bad predictions for the 2010 season includes these excerpts on predictions concerning the Steelers that are a reminder of how grim many anticipated this past season would be

The TMQ bad predictions review

Tuesday Morning Quarterback's annual Bad Predictions Review needs no introduction, so let's dive in...

Predictions at the Season's Start: Michael Wilbon, then of The Washington Post, predicted the Steelers would not make the playoffs, as did the New York Post. Gene Collier of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette predicted the Steelers "look like maybe a 6-win team." Adam Schein of Fox Sports predicted Pittsburgh would miss the playoffs. The Steelers made the Super Bowl.

None of USA Today's eight preseason predictions had Pittsburgh reaching the Super Bowl. Three USA Today predictors forecast Mike Singletary as coach of the year, one forecast Wade Phillips as coach of the year; both were fired. ....

Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic of "Mike & Mike in the Morning" both had Pittsburgh missing the playoffs while Greenberg had San Francisco reaching the Super Bowl.

Then there was the incredible ESPN.com double meta forecast. Here and here, ESPN.com offered an astonishing 44 dueling NFL season forecasts. Only one had the Steelers winning the AFC, while the Texans, Chargers, Cowboys and Forty-Niners, all of whom missed the playoffs, were frequently mentioned as Super Bowl entrants.

Why do they refer to themselves as experts?

i had 3 teams wrong chiefs, thought chargers would get in...

had giants instead of eagles choke

and vikings instead of bears yikes

I felt the "experts" underrated the team. Now, no I did not think we would be playing for our seventh Super Bowl a couple weeks ago but I thought we absolutely had a shot at the playoffs. They seem to have forgotten that while we were 9-7 in 2009 that we lost a lot of close games and many of those were impacted by perhaps the worst special teams unit I've ever seen along with missing our game changer, Polamalu. Now I thought hte Ravens would win the division but that we'd be a wild card. It also helped that our draft was very good. Pouncey looks like like he's going to be the next great center but also Sanders/Brown look good as do other guys like Slyvester.

Honestly, if you watched the way the team collapsed late in 2009, plus the age of the defense, the exit of Santonio, and the suspension of Ben, the receiver signings of the Ravens, and the re emergence of the Bengals, (OK, those last 2 just made me laugh to myself) you could see why some experts could have the Steelers around .500 and missing the playoffs. Us, as fans tend to believe a little more strongly in our team, plus we have the benefit of playing in division and seeing the Bengals flounder when they should be good and watching the Ravens look great on paper only to lose the big one to their big brother.
