Steelers Get C(h)ris Carter…the LB Not the WR
Posted on April 30, 2011 by ryan
http://www.steelerslounge.com/2011/0...rterthe-lb-wr/

Gretz IM to me, 3:02 p.m.: “we haven’t taken a linebacker yet.”

Fifteen minutes later the Steelers draft defensive end Chris Carter from Fresno State who will move to linebacker in the NFL. Carter is listed at 6-1, 248, hoofed a 4.62 40 at the combine, and threw up 225 27 times. (Other shorts and t-shirt stats that may interest you: 36-inch vertical, 6.88 three-cone drill, 4.34 20-yard shuttle.) As for actual football, Carter had 55 tackles (16.5 for loss) and 11 sacks during the 2010 season.

Reader pghshawn tweeted us this shortly after Steelers selected Carter: “@Steelers_Lounge I don’t get it…unless they plan on bringing him inside”.

I’ll be honest, I don’t know anything about the kid other than what others tell me, which is why I now happily share with you Mike Mayock’s thoughts on Carter:

“Chris Carter to me is a 4-3 hand-in-the-dirt defensive end that was the WAC Defensive of the Year that will either be asked to play SAM linebacker in a 4-3 or a rush linebacker in a 3-4.

“Remember, Pittsburgh’s a team — as far as rush linebackers are concerned — that doesn’t care much about length. New England wants those 6-3, 6-4, 6-5 guys, but when you’re talking about Woodley and Harrison, Pittsburgh cares more about explosion. And Carter’s got some explosion. It’s a little bit of a risk because he’s a conversion guy but I really like Chris Carter.”

As to why the Steelers took him, Jason La Canfora said scouts compared Carter to Von Miller, and that the Ravens, who had two compensatory picks at the end of the fifth round, might have been interested in him. And this: Carter was the best player on the Steelers’ draft board. Plus, there’s a good chance Anthony Madison’s days are numbered given today’s draft haul, and, hell, Keenan Lewis might not be far behind. Which means Carter was taken for his special-teams potential, too. I know Madison doesn’t fill the same role as say, Stevenson Sylvester, but you can never have too many psychopaths on that unit.

For what it’s worth (and at this point in the proceedings, I’d imagine not much … but I’m going with it anyway), NFLDraftScout.com had Carter projected to go in the third round. Now, draft peeps often list 40-50 guys as projected to go in a particular round. Mathematical laws prohibit that from actually happening, which means players inevitably fall. So who the hell knows. I will now show a Chris Carter highlight video to distract you while I sneak out the back.

(Another project LB. This draft blows chunks. Who should we cut so he has a roster spot, Woodley, Timmions, Harrison, etc. - mesa)

Carter is a steal in the 5th round I don't know why you guys are upset...

Harrison isn't young and it doesn't hurt to add depth to the most important position for the Steelers defensive scheme.

It was the 5th round and there wasn't much talent left. Carter was the most talented in the Steelers' eyes and he could be a huge sleeper pick.

Isn't Worillds the only backup OLB on the roster? Never hurts to have depth at that position since we develop those well plus there's the uncertainity with Woodley's contract and Harrison getting up there in age.

Ed: OLB Needs Time; Will NFL Give it to Him?

The Steelers drafted another developmental player on the fifth round, outside linebacker Chris Carter of Fresno State. He played defensive end in college and will convert to outside linebacker in the 3-4 with the Steelers. That’s typical and the way many outside linebackers have made their way here from undersized college defensive ends.

The problem this season, though, is there is no preseason. The owners have locked out the players so there is no opportunity for players such as Carter and their fourth-round pick, small-college cornerback Cortez Allen of The Citadel to develop. The longer this thing drags on, the more these rookies will be left out in the cold and of no use to the team in 2011, if there is a season.

Linebackers coach Keith Butler pointed to the example of Thaddeus Gibson last year. He was in the same boat, trying to learn the outside linebacker position in the pros but he could not join the Steelers until Ohio State’s school term ended in June.

That put him far behind and he never caught up and ultimately was released by the Steelers.

For those OLBs making the transition like Carter, it usually takes two years, Butler noted. The lockout won’t help that process.

The guy seems to have some explosion,it never hurts us to have another explosive linebacker. Also Stuardivants character concerns does not match the Steelers organization.

Like I said before, Woodley or Timmons might get released. Farrior is up there in age and this might be his last season. Harrison might have 2-3 years left as well. Foote is likely gone after this season. So lets look at if Woodley was to be released and Farrior retired at the end of the season.

Sly takes Farrior's place
Worilids takes Woodley's place.
Which would leave Carter as the back up.

Now lets look at this way. Woodley and Timmons are both kept. Farrior retires and Harrison retires in 2-3 years.

Sly takes Farrior's place
and according to the article mesa posted, it would take 2-3 years for Carter to develop. So we have Worilids or Carter competing for the starting job. And competition never hurt anyone right?

Jason La Canfora: OLB Chris Carter, Steelers, Round 5 (162) — I have a feeling the Steelers are going to be able to get legit bang for the buck out of Carter. I love the fit there. A scout told me, “If you love Von Miller, you’re going to at least like this kid.”

Do they have some deal with the devil that they have to

I would have much rather seen a OL, NT or WR or DB taken.

Oh well, hope they make enough good picks to offset their
retarded over-the-top LB picks.

How many OL and CB do you guys want? I don' think any of these guys will make immediate impacts, they need some maturing. James Harrison is getting older and the Steelers need to ALWAYS upgrade their pass rush.

This guy had 11 sacks and 4 forced fumbles last year (7th and 5th in the NCAA) I love this pick, you have to always upgrade your talent and I think that the Steelers know what they are doing.
