The team has to BELIEVE it can win, and WANT TO WIN, as part of a business strategy for turning a profit. Right now the business strategy is how to turn a profit (or break even, or serve as a tax deduction) regardless of winning.

There is no doubt in my mind that the reason this team doesn't win is that it doesn't want to. Winning means more investment, more investment means more risk. Why put out a big payroll and risk finishing 78-84, like the Mets sometimes do, when you can have one of the lowest payrolls in the league and finish 70-92?

Cuban is the kind of guy who loves that risk. McClatchy isn't. Cuban would gladly lay out the long money for a shot at the ring and the profit generated by a lucrative post-season run. McClatchy is content eking out a modest return on investment. Both are good financial strategies, but only one is fun to watch.

I read some stuff on a couple other forums that this dialogue with Cuban was going on, its good to see it finally come out in a well presented article. Why MLB hasnt put pressure on McClatchy/Nutting to sell ala the Tampa Bay situation I have no clue.
