numbers only tell half the story. ike has to guard the #1 receiver which is a much tougher assignment

Ike is a better CB than Gay - no argument from me. I just think Gay does what is asked of him as the #3 CB.

From the horse's mouth... Tomlin at news conference yesterday -

"He shows good awareness," Tomlin said of Gay. "He is combative in the run, he shows blitz capabilities, but, more than anything, the ability to play in the slot usually is exemplified by what a guy is able to take in and understand from an above-the-neck standpoint. To be quite frank, it is probably more like safety with the position than it is like corner, and he has shown an aptitude for it."

Again, I trust the head coach to be capable of judging talent that will help this team

Not that there's anything wrong with "that".

Saints CBs gets schooled on first drive. Aaron Rodgers is good and so are his receivers. But when he is "good" against the Steelers, our fans think its all William Gay's fault.

No kidding. And Brees threw for over 400 yards? Does that mean the GB secondary sucks too? It's not so much the individual talent on this team, but maybe more about how well the scheme works. Brady and Rogers seem to understand the Steelers defensive scheme and have success so hopefully coach Lebeau can draw up a few tricks to confuse the "elite" QBs this year.

Yes and no. Fitzpatrick and Gradkowski are not elite, and yet we made them look like Pro Bowlers. Our defensive secondary tends to play down to the opposition, but when down is not down at all, like with Brady and Manning, then we've got real problems. No doubt about it, we need upgrades everywhere except Troy. But no, Gay's not the problem.
