Matt Cooke is my hero!

I watched the game real late on DVR - had to watch the Yankees lose first - ha!

Pens came out jumping, they were swarming all over the canucks in the 1st p. Malkin looked faster, he drew all their attention while the little guys battled in the corners for pucks.

Fleury > Luongo

The shootout was no contest...Luongo was flopping like a fish

Pens won their season opener last night, 4-3 in a SO. Was an absolutely fantastic game to watch.

The good: - Fleury was spectacular. Some of the saves he made were just out of this world. He looked focused and confident. Definitely glad to see him in that shape (mentally and physically) to start the season.
- Cooke had a fantastic game as well. He had 2 goals, one a power play goal, the other a shorthanded goal. And he was all over the place...his name was called all evening. Glad to see him stepping up.
- Geno's shootout goal. It was just spectacular...and the fact that it was Geno doing it (he typically isn't very good in the SO) made it even more spectacular. He also had a nice assist on the first power play goal to Neal.

The bad: - Geno the rest of the game. It was painful to watch. Constantly getting beat, constantly losing the puck and constantly falling down. Lot's of things he still needs to work on. I'm happy he got some confidence and redemption out of the SO goal though...he's going to need it.

The ugly: - Nothing really, unless you want to just consolidate the bad and the ugly...cause sometimes it was just bad and others it was really ugly lol.

That's one way to look at it I suppose (in regards to Malkin). I thought he had a pretty poor game though. What was up with him losing his edge so often? Was Dana Heinze drunk when he did his skates or what?

I wish we would have gotten Hamhuis when we had the chance - he was doing a good job shutting down Malkin for most of the game. The Canucks had one mission - to double and triple him when he handled the puck. But he still looked like a man amongst boys the open ice - he was flying!

I couldn't stay up for the game (wish I had now!), but the Pens held on to beat the Flames 5-3 in Calgary last night.

CALGARY -- The Pittsburgh Penguins countered Calgary's opening-night pregame laser show with some second-period fireworks.

The Penguins used a four-goal middle period to beat the Flames 5-3 on Saturday night, spoiling the start of the new season for the sellout crowd at the Scotiabank Saddledome -- just as they did two nights earlier in Vancouver, when they beat the Canucks 4-3 at Rogers Arena. Pittsburgh, still playing without Sidney Crosby as he recuperates from a concussion, will try for a perfect swing through Western Canada on Sunday night in Edmonton.

Jordan Staal and Matt Niskanen had a goal and an assist as the Penguins received goals from five players. Marc-Andre Fleury made 17 saves as Pittsburgh outshot Calgary 38-20.

The Flames opened the scoring at 15:32 of the first period after defenseman Mark Giordano slid between Penguins forwards Craig Adams and Arron Asham and fed an open Curtis Glencross in the slot. Glencross one-timed the puck behind goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury.

But the Penguins awoke in an explosive second period that saw them outshoot Calgary 16-5 and beat Miikka Kiprusoff four times.

I hope Malkin comes back to play and they were really holding him out of the 3rd p for knee soreness and rest and not injury


...and am I the only one screaming for Fleury to get back in his net everytime he goes wandering around trying to handle the puck?

'Malkin barely played in the third period. In the second period, he had his legs taken out on a faceoff by Calgary's Curtis Glencross. He remained in the game but played only on a power play in the third period, sitting on the bench while the Penguins held off Calgary's furious charge.

Coach Dan Bylsma indicated that there is nothing seriously wrong with Malkin."

"Just played a lot of hockey and was a little sore," Bylsma said. "The score dictated that we were going to keep him off the ice. Given the score and situation - we have a game tomorrow - we weren't putting him on the ice."
