I think he has some decent upside, the MAC competition knock is no longer valid with the quality of QB they have been putting out, I would say he has a chance to be our Matt Schaub

Cool Re: Omar Jacobs..Welcome to The Steelers

Even though my first post to this I was a wee bit skeptical I still like the prospect of "gadget position" for this guy. If anyone can get some value from this guy, it will be Bill and Whiz!

i dont think he was drafted to be a gadget guy. 4-5 teams drafted college qb's today to turn into gadget guys on the heels of randel els success. funny how 1 play will change teams drafting philosophies. its not like we have been having success with this type orf player for the past 10 years.

1 play and the rest of the league wakes up. o. jacobs was drafted to be as much of a slash, as tee martin and b. st pierre was. o jacaobs will be a back up qb to replace t. maddox roster spot. nothing more.

I'm not sure how much of a "gadget" guy Omar will be. From what I've looked at, he's more of a pocket passer (26 TDs to 7 INTS last season!), though he's good enough on his feet to avoid the pass rush and gain the occasion first down or TD (a bit like Ben). He's the prototypical size and height for a QB, has a strong arm and is tough as hell, but the general consensus seems to be that he should have stayed in school another year. I think this guy has a ton of upside and'll probably start for a another team in a few years. First thing, he needs to learn to get snaps from center.

Whoever said to try him at RB was joking, right? He is just not that kind of QB.

This guys is super accurate and threw 41 Tds to 4 Ints one season. gadget? Are you people daft? He has a side arm deliver at times, but nowhere near as bad Rivers. He will be #3 and has the ability to be the #2 QB in the future. He will give us a chance to win games if has to play, unlike some others QBs that we have had. (Maddox, Rutherford, StPierre...).

The ONLY knocks on him...
He throws side arm on some of his throws. But remained very accurate, even when throwing deep.
He doesnt show/use much progression, but didnt have to.
He played in the MAC.

He is a QUARTERBACK. Not a runner or a receiver or a slash or a gadget man.

Well said, BigSteel.

Though I don't know how much of a knock playing in the MAC is now.......

I've been interested in Jacobs since earlier in the college season, and was somebody I was really hoping we'd try out for our 3rd-Stringer.

I've seen the kid play, and between him and Gradkowski, I'd be happy with either player. Accurate pocket passer (definitely no gadget play guy) with a weird throwing motion who has NEVER HAD PROPER COACHING AT THE QB POSITION.

Give him some time with Mark Whipple and this kid will become a nice back-up, maybe even more.
