Default The more Honey Badger highlights I see the more I wish we drafted him

This kid is special. I know he didn't even make it to us in the third but I wonder if we would have taken a flyer on him over Wheaton if he did. What do you guys think?

I just don't think he was ever going to be considered by the Steelers unless he fell to the 5th or 6th round. His personal issues and off the field problems made him too big of a risk, and not the type of player they generally draft. They have been burned by a couple of players like that the last few years in Rainey and Ta'amu.

I think they would have stayed away from him.

I agree, even with as physically talented as he is I highly doubt the Honey Badger was even on the Steelers' draft board.

I wanted him last year as well. It was obvious we would never take him because of all the character concerns. It was of those instances that really made me wish we weren't so stuck-up on getting "high character" guys.

Yup, it seems in the Steelers eyes that players aren't capable of changing their character when given the proper mentorship that they may have been lacking.

Dan Marino was always going to be a drug user/party type to them and so will Tyrann Mathieu.

Over Le'Veon? Over Jarvis?

Nope.

Not over Jarvis, no. I love Le'veon, but honestly I would have rather had Mathieu and best RB available in the third (Lattimore, Knile Davis, Jonathan Franklin, Andre Ellington, Zac Stacy were available among others) over Bell and Wheaton back then, and I think I still would today.

Mathieu played slot corner last season. Did he do a good job of it? Sure, but we'll see whether or not he can maintain the same level of production when he's going up against the best receivers on teams, not role players. For example, Mathieu would've been paired up against Cotchery and not Sanders or Brown.

Could level of competition have anything to do with it?

Really? Everything I heard and saw had him starting at free safety. He was a slot corner in college, but he played the position like a free safety and I thought that's where he played for the Cardinals. IDK, I didn't watch the Cardinals much so I wouldn't know.

Still, I watched him enough in college and heard enough good things about his rookie season to think he would have been an amazing Steeler.
