Default For me success this season boils down to this.

Providing that the D can somewhat hold their statistical form of last year, the gains to be found on this team's success are to be found on the offensive side of the ball. Statistically speaking there is great room for improvement there.

If you look at the attachment, you'll see that offensively the Steelers ranked in the lower half of the league in key areas: PPG, YDS, and TURNOVERS.

If the offense can just reverse these numbers to at least the middle of the pack, the result should be a better season and a less frustrating team to watch.

This is no shocking revelation I know but if I'm management and Mike T., I'm glued to these numbers. They speak to an offensive inefficiency and ineptitude that plagues this team. The remarkable thing is that the Steelers were even in the running at all.

This was because of the heroic efforts of the D who admittedly struggled to create TOs. Still I can't blame them. They kept the ship afloat while the offense contributed by taking on water in the form of blown opportunities, 3 and outs and turnovers galore.

Z,

I agree, our D should be again fairly solid. The key to this season, as you said, is going to be on improving on our offensive stats. That however is going to be contingent on injuries, especially on the OL. If we have two or more OL men go down for any significant length of time, it's all over but the shouting.

While our D may have been #1 last year... it seems like they rarely made the big stops that they needed to make for us to win the game. Too many times, opposing teams drove down field to steal wins from us. Very discouraging.

My hope is that the defense starts making the big plays (interceptions, sacks, fumble recoveries, etc) that can change the outcome of a game.

Offensively, I want to see improvement in two areas: more effective running game and stretching the field with our passing game.

The 3-5 yard passes that dominate Haley's playbook and the more effective running game.... should open up the vertical game... allowing Big Ben to stretch the field which makes us a more dangerous offense.

I think... for these two areas... players like Jarvis Jones and Cortez Allen (turnover machines) plus Bell and Wheaton on offense... gives us a better chance of finding success in both of these areas.

Allen being on the field is going to help in the Interception department. On top of that, a healthy Woodley and Jarvis out there wreaking havoc is going add to the turnover department as well.

The health of Big Ben will determine how far we go. He IS our offense. Remember the O-Line of 2008? Awful, but we still won the SB. Ben determines our worth.

I was not that impressed with the D no matter what the stats say. The main stat that a defense needs to shoot for is TO differential. I could care less about the so called stats. That D last year was not fierce and did not put the fear of God in opposing teams. That has to change and it has to change NOW. Harrison was pathetic. Woodley was pathetic. No pressure on the QB leads to big yardage on third and long. It happened over and over and over last year. Harrison needed to be jettisoned. Hopefully he doesn't save his biggest games for the Steelers and suck against everyone else.

Yup = #1 D stats are for 3rd placers. No turnovers mean we don't sniff #7

Everyone has counted our fellas out - I hope they feel that, I hope they let that sink in really good - if I was a leader of that team, you better believe that every man on that 53 would be held responsible

We have 4 to 5 seasons left MAYBE with Ben. If we want one more - whatter'we waintin' for? The time to try and wait and develop is past us - its time to get back on top

Ben was as clutch as could be that year.

thats not what he is all about.

James doesnt save nothing and leaves everything on the field. He's been that way from his first game until his last. Probably one of the biggest reasons he was such a fan favorite.

No doubt we need the offense to improve A LOT, but I think the defense will actually improve, not just hold to what they did last year. If we were that good on D last year imagine how good we will be if we make the big stops and get a lot more turnovers? That's what a healthy Polamalu and Jarvis Jones will give us. I may be in the minority thinking this, but I think the old defense we were used to is back.

In today's league though it wouldn't make a difference with a 20+ ranked offense with no running game and a QB who lost his "clutchness". Ben will get it back, that's who he is, but he needs a lot of help compared to what he got last year. This is their 2nd year with Haley and supposedly the offensive players helped "tweak" the playbook. We have a load of top picks on the O line and a RB that is supposed to be bad ass. No excuses this year.
