Forbes magazine has its annual story on NFL franchise values out - Steelers come in at #18 with a valuation of $880 million.
http://www.forbes.com/lists/2006/30/...ions_Rank.html Top 5 teams in value Washington Redskins 1.423 billion New England Patriots 1.176 billion Dallas Cowboys 1.173 billion Houston Texans 1.043 billion Philadelphia Eagles 1.024 billion Steelers are in the lower half of the valuation list, but the franchise value is up from $300 million in 1998 so it is not as if we need to start a charity drive for the Rooneys. |

I don't see Houston as being worth more. They're an expansion team for cryin out loud. They're a bigger market I guess.... *Finger* to Forbes.

It's sad when "Americas Team" is ranked 18. I call BS.

I thought the Cowboys were supposed to be "America's team".... Shows what I know.
Anyway, I think a big part of the reason the Steelers have a higher than average appeal outside of their city is because they are a smaller market team and have extravagent owners. I think all things being equal, a person is going to gravitate towards liking a team like Steelers instead of, say, the Redskins if they take ownership factors into consideration.

I usually find these lists to be useless. A team is only worth what some one is willing to pay for it.

America's Team showed up in Detroit and made Fords Field look like a black and gold blanket. It has been that way in every Super Bowl city that we have visited in the past.

theoretically, if a teams stadium has 100,000 seats vs. another teams 50,000 it will have twice the earnig potential (tickets, consessions, parking, etc.) take into consideration naming rights, charges to view camps and purchase beverages and you can see where 1 club may have a bigger earning potential than another. but keep in mind the same house that will only cost you $250,000 in san antonio will cost you a cool million in nyc or la.
