Default Is Tomlin Overrated?

There seems to be two contrasting opinions about Mike Tomlin. Supporters consider Tomlin a top coach in the NFL, winning a Super Bowl in 2008 and losing one in 2010 with multiple playoff appearances in between. Others say he simply took the baton from Cowher, who set him up in a situation just about any competent coach could thrive in. As the Steelers stumble out of the gate in 2013, and any Cowher influence clearly dissipating, one can only wonder how good of a coach is Tomlin? He is not play calling coach like Payton, McCarthy or SF'sHarbaugh, preferring to defer to assistants to call the plays on both sides. And when Tomlin does get involved, he has made some obvious clock management and challenge gaffes more common with the likes of Steve Spurrier with the Redskins than what should be expected from his resume. As the team has been in decline as of late, the apparent whiffs on drafting, Ben seemingly regressing or at best, not improving, and a failure to adapt a new defensive philosophy, what exactly has Tomlin put his stamp on? Indeed, Tomlin is a classy guy who gives some of the best press conferences ever and is a role model for young men. Even a leader of men, but is he a good head football coach? Should we be looking a but more under Tomlin's hood?

No.

Tomlin will be a top paid coach in this league as long as he wants and when he moves on he will enjoy even more success if he so desires.

People say the same about cow her and gruden. Don't think they can't step into an 8 mil/ year job whenever they want and don't think tomlins career won't surpass theirs.

No. You don't lead a team to multiple Super Bowls because you got lucky. He's the real deal. He's not perfect, but nobody is. Fans need to sit back and understand how lucky they have been being a Steelers fan and having this much success for this long. We are blessed. You would never know it from the posts of some here, but we are.

He's been a victim of bad scouting, poor strength and conditioning, and weak drafts of late as well as possible sub par position coaching/coordination

Tomlin inherited a great team and has done extremely.

Only recently has he had any adversity.

How he responds to it may very well determine if he is a great coach or just good.

All things that are under the control and influence of the head coach. Rather than remaining a victim of the above, a competent head coach would have fixed those deficiencies by now. But not our guy.

I am as big of a Tomlin supporter as you will find but he most certainly hasn't been victimized by any of the above except for maybe the poor position coaches selections which is the one area list ed that he has the most control.

people say mike is lucky to have inherited bill cowers players. But he was lucky to have inherit dick lebeau. Mike and bill have only won one ring with the steelers. Dick has won two.
