Default Week 6 Gameday Thread: Steelers @ Jets 10/13/2013

For the second week in a row, the Jets have the opportunity to take advantage of an opponent that is grossly underachieving. A stretch in the schedule that was previously thought to be brutal suddenly seems a bit more manageable.
The winless Pittsburgh Steelers are a mess right now. Things have gotten so dire that coach Mike Tomlin has banned games such as pool and ping pong from the locker room.
Unless cue sticks and paddles are to blame for their turnover problems or woes on the offensive line, prohibiting fun won't accomplish much.
Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is taking way too many sacks and has fumbled five times to go along with his five interceptions. While the Jets are experiencing similar issues with Geno Smith, there's a bit more leeway with a rookie as opposed to a two-time Super Bowl champion.
Safety Ryan Clark, Pittsburgh's defensive captain, has openly criticized Roethlisberger's style of play and thinks his quarterback's tendency to try and extend plays is part of the reason for their disappointing start.
Gang Green's defense should be salivating at the thought of going against an offensive line that, due to injuries and demotions, is in shambles. Expect the Jets to swarm Roethlisberger and force him into once again trying to do too much with the football.
Making matters worse for the Steelers, the team is yet to record a takeaway in their first four games. No team in NFL history has ever gone five games into the season without recording one. Giving the ball away at such a high rate while not forcing any turnovers of their own is a recipe for disaster and arguably the main reason Pittsburgh is yet to win a game.
The Steelers have used their bye week to work on their problems but it remains to be seen if they've corrected them.
Coming off of his best game as a pro, the Jets hope their quarterback has turned the corner and shed his mistake-prone ways. The Steelers rank last in sacks so Smith should have plenty of time to throw the ball, easing his decision-making process.
Pittsburgh's below average rush defense should also take some pressure off Smith. When Gang Green is able to get their running game going, it opens up the field for Smith and doesn't allow opposing defenses to sit back in coverage.
Things might be a bit more difficult for the Jets than expected as they've had to deal with a couple of serious injuries the past few days. Linebacker Antwan Barnes was placed on injured reserve Wednesday and is out for the remainder of the season. Barnes, who hurt his knee in the Monday night win over the Atlanta Falcons, has been a key component in rushing the quarterback and is just the type of player that would have given Roethlisberger fits all day long.
Already thin at cornerback, Antonio Cromartie suffered a non-contact injury at practice Thursday and his status is unknown going forward. The Jets are concerned about the injury, and given the play of some of their other corners, Cromartie is one guy they cannot afford to lose on defense.
Despite the injuries, these are the types of winnable games that the Jets need to capitalize on.
If Gang Green can continue to limit their mistakes while exploiting Pittsburgh's weaknesses, a showdown looms next week against the New England Patriots with first place in the AFC East on the line.

Default Re: Week 6 Gameday Thread: Steelers @ Jets 10/13/2013

Coming off what could be a defining effort in his young career, the New York Jets' Geno Smith hopes to take the next step in his development by putting up consecutive strong performances.
Facing a defense that hasn't had a takeaway, Smith might be up to the task against the winless Pittsburgh Steelers, but he won't have his top pass-catcher available after the suspension of tight end Kellen Winslow.
The Jets look to continue their surprising start and remain undefeated at home Sunday when they try to extend Pittsburgh's worst start in 45 years.
Smith helped New York (3-2) notch its best start since 2010 on Monday night, completing 16 of 20 passes for 199 yards and a career-best three touchdowns in a dramatic 30-28 victory in Atlanta. After the Falcons went ahead with 1:54 to play, Smith connected on four straight passes and added an 8-yard run to set up Nick Folk's game-winning field goal on the final play.
The rookie was tied for the NFL lead with 11 turnovers, including eight interceptions, but didn't have one Monday and completed a season-best 80.0 percent of his passes despite being sacked four times.
"It was a tremendous game for him without question," coach Rex Ryan said.
Winslow's only reception was a 1-yard TD catch, and he leads the Jets with 17 receptions. He was suspended for four games Friday for violating the league's policy on performance enhancing substances.
Smith and the Jets have followed each of their previous two wins with a loss. He's completed 64.4 percent of his attempts with six touchdowns and three interceptions in three victories, compared to 55.1 percent with one score and five picks in two losses. However, both defeats came on the road, and New York has gone 2-0 at home.
With former starter Mark Sanchez out of the picture following season-ending shoulder surgery, Smith appears to be the future of a franchise that has posted back-to-back wins only once in its last 24 games.
"I got a memo from the league, and they said we can win two games in a row," Ryan joked. "I think that's going to be what I talk to our team about."
The Steelers (0-4) are just looking for one win following their bye week, off to their worst start since opening 0-6 in 1968. They'll have a different look defensively, with defensive end Cameron Heyward starting while rookie Vince Williams lines up alongside Lawrence Timmons at inside linebacker.
Despite being 10th in total defense with 321.8 yards allowed per game, Pittsburgh is the only team in the league yet to create a turnover. The Steelers' minus-11 turnover differential is second-worst only to the New York Giants and their four sacks are the NFL's fewest.
"I like the attitude, demeanor and approach to work that the guys have taken," coach Mike Tomlin said. "That's just part of the equation. Obviously, putting it together and producing victory is the most significant part of the equation."
After missing the first three games with a foot injury, rookie Le'Veon Bell hopes to keep giving Pittsburgh's sluggish running game a lift. He finished with 57 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries in his debut, a 34-27 loss to Minnesota in London on Sept. 29, and his workload figures to increase against the Jets.
Bell is likely to have at least one and perhaps two new faces in front of him.
With struggling Mike Adams heading to the bench, Kelvin Beachum and newly acquired Levi Brown are expected to see action at left tackle. Guard Ramon Foster remains bothered by a strained pectoral muscle and his status is uncertain. If Foster can't go, Brown will likely start at left tackle, with the versatile Beachum replacing Foster.
They'll try to provide better protection for Ben Roethlisberger, who was sacked five times by the Vikings and has been dropped 15 times on the season. That's tied for fourth-most in the NFL despite Pittsburgh having played one fewer game than most teams.
Roethlisberger has thrown for 789 yards and three touchdowns in the last two games but has six turnovers in that span.
He connected on 24 of 31 attempts for 275 yards and two scores without an interception in a 27-10 victory over the Jets on Sept. 16, 2012, in the teams' last matchup.
He'll face a New York defense ranked second in the league, allowing 299.0 yards per game. The Jets, though, suffered a big loss Monday when outside linebacker Antwan Barnes went down with a season-ending knee injury.
New York could also be without cornerback Antonio Cromartie due to a knee injury.
This is New York's first home meeting with the Steelers since a 19-16 victory in 2007.

We can win and set a record at the same time, 0 turnovers in 5 games, I say go for it.

I like a record that will stand forever :-).

I know that Tomlin's plan is to lull the league into a false sense of security, but I think now's the time to put the car in first gear. No more rope-a-dope.

Game 5 matchup: Steelers vs. Jets

October 13, 2013 12:05 am
By Gerry Dulac / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
When the Jets have the ball: Like the Steelers, the Jets have made a habit of giving the ball away, committing 12 turnovers, most in the AFC. But their running game averages 4.1 yards per carry and passing game averages 222.8 yards per game. The Steelers have allowed runs of 55 and 60 yards and passes of 51, 61 and 70 yards, all in the past three games. That could be a problem against rookie QB Geno Smith, who is tied for first in the league with 40-plus yard completions (5) and is seventh in completions of 20 yards or longer (20). RB Bilal Powell has rushed for 149 and 66 yards in the past two games. Smith utilizes tight ends -- Kellen Winslow Jr. and Jeff Cumberland -- something that gave the Steelers problems against the Bengals. Winslow will be out because of a four-game suspension for performance enhancing drugs. But Smith also spreads the ball to a number of receivers, including former Steelers' WR Santonio Holmes, although Holmes has been limited by a Lisfranc injury.
When the Steelers have the ball: The Jets are second in the league in total defense and rush defense, and one of the reasons is their tandem of defensive ends in the 3-4 -- rookie Sheldon Richardson (21/2 sacks, 8 QB hurries) and Muhammad Wilkerson (4 sacks). But, like the Steelers, they don't intercept the ball or force many turnovers. The Jets have just three takeaways (two fumble recoveries, one interception), third fewest in the AFC. LB David Harris leads the team with 49 tackles. OLB Calvin Pace will come in blitz situations and has 301/2 sacks since 2008. The Jets traded All-Pro CB Darrelle Revis after an injury-shortened 2012 season and replaced him with rookie Dee Milliner, their No. 1 draft choice. Milliner has been slowed by a hamstring injury. S Dawan Landry has the team's only interception. The Jets, who rank 13th in the league against the pass, will have to stop Ben Roethlisberger, who has passed for 789 yards and three TDs in the past three games. But Roethlisberger has 16 turnovers (seven lost fumbles) in his past eight games dating to last season.
Keep an eye on:
Ks Nick Folk and Shaun Suisham ... The two have not missed a field goal in 17 attempts this season. Folk, the Jets' kicker, has converted all 11 field goal attempts, including the winning 43-yarder with no time remaining in Atlanta on Monday night. He has converted six field goals between 40 and 49 yards. Suisham is perfect on all six attempts, including two from 44 yards. He had two field goals in the loss to the Vikings in London.
Intangibles:
The Steelers are off to their worst start since 1968 and have allowed the most points in four games (110) since that same season. ...The Steelers have won the past two meetings with the Jets, including postseason, but the Jets have won the past two meetings at home. The Jets are 2-0 at home this season and are coming off a big comeback victory in Atlanta, 30-28. ... The Steelers face the Jets on the road for the first time since 2007, but it is not their first game in MetLife Stadium. They defeated the New York Giants there in November. . ... The Steelers' 81.8 percent winning percentage vs. the Jets in regular season and postseason combined is their best against any team they have faced at least 20 times.
To win, the Jets must ...
1. Make a splash. The Steelers defense has been vulnerable to big plays, giving up five of 50-plus yards in the past three games.
2. Ring Bell. Rookie RB Le'Veon Bell had 57 yards rushing and 27 yards receiving in his NFL debut against the Vikings.
3. Get A.C. on A.B. They will use CB Antonio Cromartie to slow Antonio Brown, who has 21 catches for 284 yards in his past two games.
To win, the Steelers must ...
1. Be mean-o with Geno. Defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau has a 16-2 lifetime record against rookie quarterbacks.
2. Bend the ends. Wilkerson and Richardson have been a disruptive force in the D-line, accounting for 6.5 sacks and 16 QB hurries.
3. Take the ball, please. They are the only team in the league without a takeaway in 2013 after being minus-10 in turnover margin a season ago.

I'm with Bouchette on this: Until they get a win I won't assume that they can win any of them.

ryan clark needs to worry about the defense having no turnovers maybe if he played for the ball instead of the hit pitt would have some.i dont see how big bens playmaking hurts the team when he would be getting sacked otherwise hell he might even do better with foster and adams out now only if gilbert got injured we might have a chance to win a game.

Actually Gilbert and De Castro have played two games in a row now at a much higher level.
