Default NFL bans the goalpost dunk

Not only is the New Orleans Saints' Jimmy Graham re-defining the tight end position, but he has also inspired a NFL rule change. According to the league's vice president of officiating, Dean Blandino, players will no longer be allowed to dunk the ball over the goal post after touchdowns.....

Graham is clearly the main inspiration for the rule. Twice in his career, his celebratory dunks have knocked the uprights off balance. Last season in Atlanta, a Thursday night game had to be delayed while workers re-leveled the crossbar.

Since the trial balloon of penalizing use of the n-word apparently has been shot down I guess the owners had to approve penalizing something

Glad to see they are focusing on the important stuff

Yes,
let's use more illogic to come up with rules thinking that this is good for the game, fans, the rest of society just for the sake of making up more STUPID rules instead of looking at the real issues to improve the quality of the game like getting officials to become more competent. UNBELEIVALBE!!!

It's just like coaches proposing that all calls, plays, etc. that cause controversy become reviewable but they don't want to pass that.

Anything that seems logical to the NFL owners is not allowed and anything illogical or does not even have any relevance to the game (like dunks after touchdowns) will be looked at to introduce new rules!

Not a new rule just applying the old rule to this situation.

Yep - the rule is using the ball as a "prop" - dunking had been exempted (presumably along with spiking the ball)

Previously, dunks were "grandfathered in" as a legal celebration, along with the "Lambeau Leap."

The Saints-Falcons game being delayed last year after Graham knocked the goal post out of line probably did not help

I can understand the NFL implementing the Jimmy Graham Rule. The NFL doesn't want any more delays caused by bent goalposts.
