Damn, someone called Tuesday as Mesko's last punt (out the door) day and sure enough...

Steelers release punter Mesko
By Alan Robinson
Published: Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013, 1:36 p.m.

Not long after apparently getting a vote of confidence from coach Mike Tomlin, inconsistent punter Zoltan Mesko was released Tuesday by the Steelers and was replaced by former Cowboys punter Mat McBriar.

McBriar, a 10-year NFL veteran, has a career average of 45.4 yards on 549 punts and was named to the Pro Bowl in 2006 and 2010. He averaged a league-best 47.9 yards in 2010, but dropped to a 43.8 average in 2011. He spent last season with the Eagles, averaging 46.5 yards, but was not punting in the league this season.

Mesko's 42.5 yards per punt average was the NFL's second-lowest. He also had a partially blocked punt that proved costly against the Raiders in the Steelers' 21-18 loss Sunday.

“The punting was very similar to how it's been the previous weeks,” said Tomlin, who last week said Mesko was experiencing one “junior varsity” punt every game. “He's had his moments positively and negatively. He's been inconsistent and that's not good enough.”

But Tomlin also praised how recovered late in the Raiders game, when one of his punts was downed at the 1-yard line.

The Steelers now have had four punters with them since training camp: Drew Butler, last season's punter; Brian Moorman, who is now with the Bills; Mesko and McBriar.

Meanwhile, Tomlin said his players “really don't need convincing” that the season can be salvaged despite their 2-5 record – easily the franchise's worst in his seven seasons as coach.

They're here every day. They know what we're capable of,” Tomlin said at his weekly news conference. “They work, and they put their hands in the pile. They see why we're successful and they see why we're unsuccessful. And they realize they've got control over that.”

Tomlin's comments pointed out how potentially costly the Steelers' 21-18 loss to Oakland was on Sunday. If they had won, they would have taken a 3-4 record and a three-game winning streak to New England (6-2), which has struggled at times despite its strong start. After that, the Steelers play Buffalo and Detroit at home to start a second half of the season that includes five of eight at Heinz Field.

Instead, they're 2-5 and, should they lose at New England for the third straight time to a Tom Brady-led team, they'll be 2-6 with seemingly not much to play for in the second half of the season. They last were 2-6 in 2006.

“We're not a good team right now,” injured linebacker Larry Foote said on his weekly radio show.

One reason is the Steelers' poor starts. They have been outscored 54-19 in the first quarter while falling behind by double digits in each of their five losses.

Tomlin also said:

-- All three of his injured offensive linemen could play Sunday: left guard Ramon Foster (concussion), right guard David DeCastro (ankle) and backup Guy Whimper (knee). He sounded less optimistic about DeCastro, saying he will be limited early in the practice week. DeCastro is, by far, the Steelers' best-graded run blocker.

-- Outside linebacker Jarvis Jones needs to pay more attention to detail and has fallen behind Jason Worilds on the depth chart. Jones, recovering from a concussion, played only 11 plays against Oakland.

“He's just not doing enough detail work, and Jason Worilds is. And that's just the reality of it, the added detail to work,” Tomlin said. “Jarvis needs to continue to work and I think he's open to that.”

-- Mesko's holding wasn't to blame on either of Shaun Suisham's costly field goal misses against Oakland, both wide right.

-- The Steelers “have to change” their inability to win outside of the Eastern time zone; they have dropped their last eight games in any other time zone.

--- Nose tackle Steve McLendon (illness) should be ready to practice Wednesday. Rookie wide receiver Markus Wheaton (broken finger) also might return this week.
The Steelers' worst-previous seven-game start under Tomlin was their 4-3 last season. The other five seasons, they were 5-2.

The Steelers beat the Patriots the last time they met in the 2011 season, when New England went on to the Super Bowl but lost to the Giants. The Steelers were upset by Tim Tebow-led Denver in an AFC wild-card game.

yup, Jason Worilds is always in the right spot when he doesn't make the tackle...

No one was even close to suggesting that he was the issue. He had 34 punts and 3 of them were inside the 20. That's a problem that needed to be addressed and it was.

Seriously - Shaun looked like he was going to bawl after the Raiders game. Poor Canuck.
