Default Steelers not close to contending?

Browsing some Steelers content this morning and came across this. Not the most promising prognosis.....

[I]"Whether fans want to admit it or not, the Steelers are in a rebuilding phase, and itís going to take at least some time to stock their roster with the kind of talent good enough to win 11 or 12 games on an annual basis.

James Harrison is gone. Hines Ward is gone. James Farrior is gone. Casey Hampton is gone. These are football players that, years from now, will be revered and immortalized in Pittsburgh much like the 70s Steelers legends are today.

Did anyone really think it was going to be easy to replenish such a star-studded roster?"

What do you guys think?

Here is the link to the rest of the column.

Good article. This is not a good team. If they don't turn it over and get turnovers, they can hope to eek out a 3-pt win.

They're getting beaten on both lines of scrimmage. When that happens consistently, game over.

The question is, are they going to try to rebuild around Ben? If not, unless they strike it rich with a pro-ready guy like Luck, this will get worse before it gets better.

Re: the rest of the roster, next season Heyward, Allen, J. Jones, and Sharmako have to be full time starters. Maybe in a few weeks they all will be. Sooner the better. And if we're going to stick with a 3-4, get a nose tackle. McClendon would be a better DE in this scheme. We need another plugger in the middle, ala Steed and Hampton, but that will have to wait until the offseason, unless Fangupo is a hidden gem.

On offense, get Adams back to RT, which he played pretty well last year. Let Gilbert try LT one more time. If both are still lost by the end of the year, we're going to need to address that again, unfortunately. Need a big physical receiver to complement what Brown does. Is J. Brown or Moye the answer? Don't know, but we're not going to find out if they don't get a hat.

And for the love of everything holy, get rid of Haley. If you're not going to and won't get an OC to maximize Ben's strengths, trade Ben for picks. He's getting hit and sacked more than ever, and that was supposedly the problem Haley was brought in to fix.

The Steelers had their best years. I do not think they will be a "great" football team again anytime soon.
They lost a lot of great players and/or leaders since their last SB against the Packers. And these guys
had it all "together". Played great "together". They could will their team to victory. This happens to all great teams. The Cowboys (Aikman, Smith, Irvin etc.). The 49ers (Montana, Rice, Haley, Watters etc.), Pat* (Brady,
Branch, Bruschi, Vrabel etc.), the Bears (McMahon, Payton, Singletary etc). These are just a few of many great teams that had great players and leadership on one team. And they all had a 5-8 window of dominating and winning. It will be a while before the Steelers have a great team again. Gotta get the right nucleus of players.
Does not mean they can not be a good team. Which they currently are NOT one. But they could be. But this team will not be GREAT anytime soon again. I've learned to except that. Just glad we had these great years with all the great players they had/have in the last 10 -12 years.

I do not need to name the great players that the team and the fans missed. We all know who they are.... And I thanks them for giving me some great football seasons!

Thanks for posting - nice to read an article that accepts the fact the league is not designed for one team to stay at the top level indefinitely without some lucky breaks (e.g. - Colts having one awful season when Peyton was hurt and winning the Andrew Luck sweepstakes)

Your point is entirely valid.

Still, one must point out, 'one of these things is NOT like the other!'

IMO, the NFL hasn't seen a truly great team since the '92-'93 Cowboys. The salary cap and free agency simply won't allow it. Every team has at least one potentially fatal flaw now. That's just the way it is. The Broncos? Yeah, they score a ton of points. They also give up a ton of points. IMO, the Broncos are in trouble the first time Peyton is forced to play in a snowstorm and the QB on the other sideline is someone like Brady or Rodgers.

On the flipside, the Chiefs' defense is tearing things up. But if the defense has an off day, does an Alex Smith-led offense really strike fear into anyone's heart? I don't think so.

It's really no coincidence that 9-7/10-6 teams are getting to and winning Super Bowls nowadays.

Are their fans out there that really believe Steelers are a contender this season?

We aren't even in the vicinity of being average. We are complete shit this year. Not many teams have a record worse than ours.

Proof is in the pudding, baby.
