Steelers indicated to Ben Roethlisberger they intend to draft a 'tall' receiver in the first or second round

Neal Coolong

Big Ben want tall receiver.

That's been slogged around for nearly a decade now, ever since Ben Roethlisberger fueled Hines Ward's fire after the departure of pre-penitentiary Plaxico Burress by mentioning he wants a "tall" receiver - apparently War'd 6-foot-1 wasn't tall enough.

Now, amid contract extension speculation, there's some indication those talks may be underway. Post Gazette reporter Gerry Dulac let rip some of that spec Wednesday from his weekly chat on the paper's web site.

"I think they will stick with what they have, plus draft a tall receiver in the first or second round," Dulac wrote in response to a question regarding Sanders. "I think they will let Sanders leave in free agency for a number of reasons and are perfectly comfortable thinking Markus Wheaton will not only replace him, but also be a much better receiver.

Fairly vanilla. But the he reveals something in an "I wasn't supposed to give specifics, so I'll say it generally instead" kind of way.

"Their intent is to take a tall receiver early - they have already indicated that to Ben Roethlisberger - another indication that Sanders will be gone."

This smacks of contract concession. It's not a trade, Mr. Rapoport, it's a tall receiver Roethlisberger wants. And according to Dulac, the Steelers appear ready to give it to him. What else would have brought about such a conversation?

That brings the topic of conversation back to the likes of Mike Evans or Kelvin Benjamin around the 15th pick. Throw in some Jordan Matthews or Penn State's Allen Robinson for the late first/early second round, and, like Carl Weathers, you've got a nice stew goin'.

This is Pittsburgh's way of saying "Oh, [x team behind us], you want Mike Evans? We do too. What's he worth to you?". Smokescreen.

I've talked about Kony Ealy before, but he's an interesting pick at 15.

At face value, Ealy may be in the top two pass rushers in this years class. He's long and has freakish athletic ability for his size. At 6'5, 275 lbs. he has an explosive first step and has the ability to bend and use his strength and speed to get around Tackles at the next level, a la Aldon Smith. While he weighs 275, he moves like he's 250. He does struggle against the run, but at Missouri he was asked to pass rush the majority of his snaps, also like Smith at Missouri.

People have expressed concern about his size and whether or not he'd be able to play OLB at 275. I think people are confusing weight with BMI. For example, LaMarr Woodley played in that 275 - 280 pound range.

This is Woodley:

This is Kony Ealy:

They may both be around 275 lbs., but Ealy possesses much more muscle tone and has a taller frame. He may need to shed about 5 - 8 lbs. to get into that 267 - 270 range, but that's nitpicking at this point.

there's quite a few 6-3 + receivers in this draft...we'll just have to wait for the combine to see which ones can run under a 4.55 forty.

Steelers GM: This is the deepest draft in 30 years

BY JEFF ADCOX - FEB 13TH, 2014

Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert has been evaluating NFL players for three decades. And he thinks this year’s crop is the best he has ever seen.

Funny thing though, Colbert said the same thing that makes this the deepest draft is also the thing that makes it a crap shoot. He told Steelers Digest why.

“A lot of (the depth of talent in the draft class) is due to the influx of the underclassmen,” said Colbert, “but what I will also say in regards to that is, although it’s a talented group, it also has a bigger chance of failing because you’re going to get a lot of kids who aren’t physically or emotionally ready for (the NFL). We’re concerned about how many of those players came out prematurely and won’t be ready for this next challenge. I think that we have to be able to sort through them, because they’re not all ready for this.”

Many expect the Steelers to draft a wide receiver early in the draft. Especially is they lose Emmanuel Sanders in free agency. Lucky for Colbert there are many available, and most were at least juniors.

Will Clarke from WVU is a guy that they're going to look at. He's from Pittsburgh and he's a one gap 3-4 DE which is more of what our scheme has been calling for as of late. Picture a taller, leaner, rawer Cameron Heyward. Similar type of player.
