Smile Steelers down Lions to keep playoff hopes alive

Steelers down Lions to keep playoff hopes alive

Ben Roethlisberger's 1-yard touchdown flip to fullback Will Johnson with 4:46 remaining finished up a 97-yard drive that lasted more than eight minutes, and the Steelers rallied to beat the Detroit Lions, 37-27, Sunday at Heinz Field.

Roethlisberger was 29 of 45 for 367 yards and four touchdowns two in the first quarter and two in the fourth.

The Steelers (4-6) won their fourth in six games to keep their faint AFC playoff hopes alive heading into road games against AFC North rivals Cleveland and Baltimore. They play at the Browns on Sunday and four days later against the Ravens on Thanksgiving Day.

Detroit remained winless in Pittsburgh since 1955, a stretch of 10 games (0-9-1), despite 362 yards passing by Matthew Stafford, who completed only 19 of 46 passes.

The Lions (6-4) trailed 14-0 but surged back with 27 points in the second quarter to take a 27-20 halftime lead. Stafford, who passed for 267 yards in the quarter, threw touchdown passes of 79 and 19 yards to Calvin Johnson.

Detroit was in position to take a bigger lead at halftime but was turned aside on three consecutive plays from the 1-yard line and was forced to settle for a 19-yard field goal by David Akers with four seconds left in the half.

The game turned when Detroit, in position to take a 30-23 lead early in the second quarter, took a major gamble and failed.

The Lions lined up for a 27-yard field goal, but rookie holder Sam Martin took off with the ball and tried to run it through a gap on the left side of the Steelers' coverage unit. But Steve McLendon forced a fumble that Ryan Clark recovered, and the Steelers took over at their own 3.

Roethlisberger then found Antonio Brown for 16 yards on third-and-9, Heath Miller for 21 yards for a first down and Jonathan Dwyer for 13 yards down to the Detroit 20. Working out of a no-huddle, Roethlisberger then connected with Jerricho Cotchery for 19 yards to the 1 ahead of his touchdown throw to Johnson.

On the Lions' next possession, Stafford underthrew a pass intended for Johnson, and Will Allen intercepted. That led to Roethlisberger's 20-yard scoring throw to Cotchery the receiver's fifth touchdown catch in three games and a 37-27 Steelers lead.

The Lions were shut out in the first, third and fourth quarters, with all of their scoring three touchdowns and two field goals coming in the second quarter. Backup running back Joique Bell ran 2 yards for a touchdown with 1:42 left in the quarter, ahead of a quick three-and-out Steelers possession that gave Detroit a chance to add to its lead.

The Steelers, held to 19 points in the first quarter all season, took a quick 14-0 lead on Roethlisberger touchdown passes of 34 and 47 yards less than three minutes apart in the first quarter.

After allowing the Lions to score 27 of the next 33 points, the Steelers outscored Detroit, 17-0, in the second half.

This team wouldn't need playoff hopes if they had TCB vs. Oakland.

At some point I'll get over that. Not any time soon though.

The past is over and done with. It cannot be changed. What can be changed is the future. Looks like the Steelers are making progress as a team in all phases. They control their own destiny right now with two BIG division games in the next two weeks. I can't wait for Sunday against the Browns in Cleveland. It's going to be an electric atmosphere for a game that really matters so much for the Steelers.

Great post. It's going to be a huge game for both teams. I was going to go to a coworkers party, where fans would be pretty evenly split. I'm not sure I want to be around Browns fans for this one though.

Oh, absolutely.

If/when they TCB intra-division the tune will change. Until such time I reserve the right to brood.
