I would be a little concerned investing a #1 draft pick in a 6'3" 340 pound DT who already has had surgery for a torn meniscus. That is a lot of weight to put on an already damaged knee. Even with todays surgical techniques there is still a question about stability of the repair, especially when subjected to the stresses and strains a football player places on the lower extremities, and compounded by his large body habitus.

Getting a defensive end is more important than a NT. I heard somewhere that we lead the nfl (defense) in less yards (2.9) per carry in the interior. I think the problem is the de.
Who knows if Ziggy or Kiesel returns. Im not saying to select a de in the first round. We should target the best available cornerback or safety in the first round. Nix would be a solid pick but we got McClendon, Woods, Fangupo already.

Todd McShay has the Steelers selecting NT Louis Nix in his latest mock draft...

selecting nix would allow mcclendon and woods to move out to their true de position!

I agree with this. Donald is like a QB-magnet. He's definitely, in my book, an end pass rusher. I don't believe he has the size to be a NT. I could even see him, depending on the system he will play in, to possibly be converted into an OLB. Make him lose a little weight and work on his speed, he could be a pass rushing outside linebacker. We've seen DEs in college follow this process. i.e.e Terrell Suggs.

He'd have to shed over 40 pounds, then pack back on another 10 of muscle. I can't see him at OLB in a 3-4.

Put him on the line with Cam Heyward.

The drawback of doing that, IMO, is Donald is only 6'0". Off the top of my head I don't know of many defensive lineman who are that short, who are around 280 pounds. Guys like Dwight Freeny are around 6 feet tall, but they do not weigh near 280. Freeny is a speed-based pass rusher. I agree that Donald would have to lose significant fat to be like him. I think if Donald is going to lose fat, he'll be converted to a LB. But like I said above, it depends on what team he ends up with. I also would argue that NFL scouts may not think he is not big enough to be an NFL lineman. I could also see him adding weight to be around 300 pounds. Then I envision him as an end, but not a speed defense end.
