I can only assume this ranking is assumed to be in total yards per game?
We were actually ranked 13th and not 20th as you've stated.

Can have all the ILB's you want in a 3-4, but if the NT doesn't keep OG's from getting to them in the run game, all they do is make tackles 5 yards from the LOS. Again, it all starts up front and McLendon isn't a good 2 gap NT.
Mosley was arguably the best MLB/ILB in the country this season. In fact, you could probably make a case for him being a top 3 defensive player in the country... period. I don't know who had more of an impact with their play than Mosley did on a game to game basis for the Crimson Tide defense or really any other defense for any team.

But I digress, this isn't about Mosley. Steve McLendon isn't great, but he's solid. Our underlying issues run deeper than McLendon, like Troy at ILB or Vince Williams being forced into a starting role. You could also easily argue that Ziggy Hood is more of an issue on the line than McLendon is with his inability to shed blocks and get into the backfield to stop the run.

ziggy hood drives me absolutely mad!!! he is the strongest dude on the team, but he cant shed a block...he has no power moves....what is the point? drafting nix and kicking mcclendon out to end would solve all of that! mcclendon is no longer playing nose tackle and he would be playing his natural position and ziggy is out the door!!! mcclendon-nix-heyward as your front line....BOOM!!!!

This was probably already posted but this shows that McLendon was NOT the problem, he wasn't great he was solid and also this was his first year starting. Everyone wants to give other players another year why not McLendon?

if you looked at those clips and you really think McLendon was/is the problem then I dont know what to say. He isn't great but he is NOT the problem!!!!

Them clips showed bad assignments and horrible tackling, once again not McLendon's fault.

BTW look at the last line before the gifs/clips that should tell it all.

There was A LOT that changed from 2000 to 2001.

Aaron Smith took the next step in his development as a raw low rounder. 2000 was when he first started seeing significant playing time and he showed himself to be solid. As a full time starter he blossomed in 2001 into one of the best 3-4 DEs in the league.

Kirk had REALLY went off a cliff in 2000, Bell was a massive upgrade over him at ILB.

Hampton helped get NG to where it was with Steed but both Smith and Bell were more impactful to the defense.

Gildon had his career year, Porter was a tough, all told the team had 55 sacks.

At the same time, the offense was MUCH better in 2001 than 2000. Mularky was a big upgrade over Gilbride, who was horrible with Stewart.

Stewart had been completely abysmal in 2000. Jerome looked average averaging 3.8 yards a carry, they didn't have a receiver have over 700 total yards.

In 2001 the run game MASHED teams with Jerome, Fu and Zeroaue.

Jerome averaged one of his best years at 4.8 yards a carry in 2001 after the team averaged .4.8 yards a carry.

They had drafted Plax the year before and he played like stink and got hurt and did not have even 300 yards receiving. Hines took his big step up and both he and plax had 1,000 yards.

The offense was a TOP monster, improved it scoring from 17th to 7th giving teams less time to have to score more points - ie, pass, setting up the pass rush.

It wasn't the legend of Hampton and nothing else.

True.
Good point. Kendrell "DROY" Bell had a lot to do with that defensive resurgence, as well.

That said, Ray "The Knife" Lewis is one of the best ILBs of all time (it kills me to type that). And, Ray had a down year after Siragusa & another D-lineman left. Knifey was not getting "cleanly" to the LOS (he was being chipped by OGs).

And, the Ravens defense while still "good" in the total yardage (rankings), was a shell of its 2000 dominance.

Then, they got some new D-linemen, and voila! Knifey was making plays once again... because, he was no longer having to deal with OGs.

The point: Kendrell Merriman was amazing. Agreed. But, maybe part of his success was due to no longer having to deal with OGs.
