Default Re: Your Hometown

Grew up in Saxonburg, PA. Which isn't really much to look at, but we were cool enough to ourselves that they taught an elective course on the town's history in junior high.

Couple of notable things about Saxonburg...

-Founded by John Roebling, who invented the wire rope and also helped design the Brooklyn Bridge. The town's original name was Gernamia and then Sachsenburg.

-In November 1920 KDKA radio, regarded as the world's first commercial radio station, began broadcasting from East Pittsburgh, PA, but later located its transmitter in neighboring Clinton Township (considered part of Saxonburg to those who live here). The Roebling Museum in the borough maintains several artifacts. (yes, we have a museum lol)

-There is a company called II-IV just about a mile from downtown that does work with crystals and lasers...but the space they occupy used to be reason for Russians and East Germans to have Saxonburg on their maps (I've had exchange students show me these old maps). There used to be a nuclear testing facility there from the mid 40's to the 70's. In 1946 a leading-edge 450 MeV proton synchrocyclotron was built at the Nuclear Research Center.

-We are also known for having the longest tenured criminal on the FBI's most wanted list. On the afternoon of December 4, 1980, Donald Eugene Webb allegedly killed police officer Gregory Adams in Saxonburg. Webb was on the FBI Most Wanted List longer than any other fugitive since its creation in 1950. He was removed from the list on March 31, 2007 without ever being found.

-Another tragedy that Saxonburg is known for is the Cherrie Mahan case (the first missing child to be put on the "Have you seen me?" post cards). She was taken from her bus stop in Feb. '85 in a rural township just outside of Saxonburg. This was just before I turned 5 and I remember for years being warned about walking alone or talking to strangers, specifically because of her.

Not much else to say about it really. It's a small town with a central population of just over 1,500. It's a place you can walk down the street and know everyone by first name. It's where I had my first kiss (and lay), where I smoked my first cigarette, had my first drink, puffed on my first doobie, etc. etc. I hated it when I left, but missed it when I was gone.

I'm a military brat. Even more so than other often-PCSing military families, my family moved on average every 2.5 years. So I have nowhere to consider "home", unfortunately.

Hell, I went to three different schools during the course of my 5th grade year.

I grew up in Owings Mills, MD. It's a suburb northwest of Baltimore. I lived about 5 minutes away from the old Ravens practice facility and worked at a pizza place which was directly across the street. I got to meet Brian Billick, Tony Siragusa, and other lesser-known players while working there. It was also common to see Ozzie Newsome going for a jog down that road. A local college bought the property after the Ravens moved, built a campus there, and turned the practice field into a small football stadium.

I spent about 5 years in Orlando, FL before moving to the Midwest (where my wife is from). Luckily, all of the touristy stuff is far south of the city, but I still don't recommend living there. I did enjoy the last apartment I had down there, which was within walking distance of the downtown area. However, my wife's car was broken into one night, so it kind of balanced itself out. I have no future plans to live or even visit the Orlando area.

I grew up in a village called Kingswinford which is on the western edge of the West Midlands county, on the Staffordshire border.

It is generally considered one of the best places to live in the West Midlands. Though in all fairness, it doesn't have much competition. One of the best descriptions for The Black Country I have seen is "Godzilla's shit house."

It also has more than its fair share of eccentrics.
